Job description

We're a team of friends bound together by a mission to preserve our planet for future generations through innovative energy solutions and modern infrastructure. Intersect develops, constructs, and operates the most ambitious power and data center infrastructure in the country by co-locating industrial demand with dedicated gas and renewable power generation.
Intersect was acquired by Google in March 2026 and operates as an independent subsidiary. We are developing and constructing multiple gigawatts of energy and data center projects in the U.S., enabling more data center and generation capacity to come online faster. We're on an aggressive growth trajectory and looking for people hungry to tackle the largest energy challenges on the planet.
Location & Team Gatherings
Intersect has been a fully flexible workplace since its founding in 2016. We've been very intentional about the way we do things. We are not work-from-home, hybrid, or in-office - we are any and all of those options! Deepening social connections and offering shared experiences is a cornerstone of the way we work. We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.
We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in-person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.
About This Role
As part of Intersect's Environmental & Permitting team, you'll help shape permitting strategies and support environmental compliance across a growing portfolio of energy and hybrid infrastructure projects. Your work will directly influence project siting, development, engineering, construction, and operations by helping ensure facilities meet applicable air quality regulations and permitting requirements.
You'll partner closely with Business Development, Development, Engineering, Construction, Operations, Government Affairs, Community Engagement, Land, GIS, and external regulatory stakeholders to navigate permitting pathways and support project execution. From early-stage due diligence through construction and operations, you'll contribute to the successful delivery of critical infrastructure projects while developing expertise in air permitting and environmental compliance.
Team Overview
The Environmental & Permitting team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect's mission by securing the approvals and environmental pathways needed to develop, construct, and operate large-scale energy infrastructure. We partner across the organization to balance compliance, execution speed, stakeholder engagement, and long-term operational success. Joining this team means helping deliver critical infrastructure projects while expanding your expertise through complex, high-impact work across multiple markets and technologies.
What You'll Do
Support Infrastructure Development
  • Perform environmental due diligence for acquisitions and early-stage development opportunities, including air permitting pathway assessments, air dispersion modeling reviews, schedule evaluations, and budget reviews
  • Identify permitting and compliance risks and communicate recommendations to project teams and stakeholders
  • Support the management of external consultants performing air quality modeling, permitting, and compliance activities
  • Contribute to permitting strategies that support project execution timelines and commercial objectives

Guide Air Permitting and Compliance
  • Prepare and submit New Source Review (NSR), Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD), Title V Operating Permit, Standard Permit, and Permit by Rule applications
  • Coordinate technical studies and supporting documentation, including emissions inventories, air dispersion modeling, BACT analyses, and related environmental evaluations
  • Support interactions with regulatory agencies throughout permit application review and approval processes
  • Assist with ongoing compliance programs for development-stage and operating facilities

Support Project Design and Execution
  • Provide air permitting and compliance support throughout engineering, procurement, construction, and operational phases
  • Review project design changes and operational plans to help ensure regulatory compliance
  • Participate in field visits, agency meetings, public hearings, community engagement activities, construction support efforts, and operational reviews
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve permitting and compliance challenges

Drive Project Excellence
  • Maintain organized project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and stakeholder communications
  • Translate technical and regulatory topics into clear recommendations for project teams
  • Contribute to internal best practices, tools, and knowledge-sharing initiatives
  • Continuously expand expertise in air permitting, compliance, and environmental regulations

What You'll Bring
The following qualifications will help you succeed in this role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field; advanced degree is a plus
  • 2+ years of experience supporting air permitting, environmental compliance, or environmental consulting activities
  • Experience supporting projects in natural gas power generation, data centers, industrial manufacturing, chemical processing facilities, refineries, or other complex infrastructure sectors
  • Familiarity working with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies
  • Working knowledge of Clean Air Act regulations, including NSR, PSD, Title V, and related state permitting programs
  • Experience coordinating consultants and technical permitting deliverables
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving capabilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Strong project management, organization, and prioritization skills
  • Familiarity with Google Earth, ArcGIS Online, and related geospatial tools
  • Curiosity, accountability, sound judgment, and a collaborative approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to work independently while building strong cross-functional relationships
