As an Editor for Community Impact, you'll bring your editorial judgment and newsroom experience to digital and print editions that directly serve the people around you. You'll set the standard for our reporters, shape coverage from concept to publication, and partner with our Design team to produce work that informs and delights in equal measure. The community will know you by name โ€” and trust your voice both inside our newsroom and out on the beat.

ABOUT YOU

You'll thrive in this role if you can:

  • Own the entire editorial production process for a monthly newspaper edition with confidence and minimal hand-holding.
  • Drive a steady cadence of timely daily digital content across web and newsletter.
  • Mentor, coach, and elevate reporters โ€” including helping early-career journalists grow into stronger writers and beat reporters.
  • Provide trusted recommendations to the General Manager and Managing Editor on hiring, performance, and staffing decisions for reporters, freelancers, photographers, and interns.
  • Generate sharp, original story ideas and champion them in planning meetings.
  • Investigate, analyze, and interpret newsworthy events to produce reporting that's accurate, engaging, and locally meaningful.
  • Bring a strong visual sensibility to graphics, sidebars, and story packaging.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Build, maintain, and continually deepen a network of news sources and community contacts.
  • Oversee beat coverage as needed, including city councils, school boards, and other public bodies.
  • Conduct interviews in person (and occasionally from the desk) across a range of perspectives to ensure accurate, well-rounded reporting.
  • Hold yourself and your team to the highest standard of accuracy under deadline pressure.
  • Uphold Community Impact's editorial stylebook and AP style across all coverage.
  • Represent the company professionally at networking events and external functions.
  • Shoot photographs for stories as needed.
  • Manage production of editorial content end-to-end.
  • Develop and grow reporters into stronger journalists.
  • Consistently hit monthly print and daily digital deadlines.
  • Master industry-specific software, including content management systems.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed in support of the newsroom.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree โ€” preferably in journalism โ€” or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 2 years of full-time experience with print or digital publication(s); candidates with a deeper track record in reporting and editing will be especially well-suited to the role.
  • Demonstrated experience interviewing, writing, editing, guiding other writers, and managing a publication's production cycle.
  • Ability to pass the company's writing and copy editing tests.
  • First-rate reporting, writing, and editing skills, with a portfolio that reflects consistent quality.
  • Proven proficiency across both hard news and feature writing.
  • Expert knowledge of AP Style.
  • Strong news judgment and a steady instinct for the stories your community actually cares about.
  • Comfortable making editorial calls independently and standing behind them.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
