Job description

If solving complex distributed systems problems at massive scale excites you, EBS Snapshots is the place to do it. Our team builds and operates one of the largest distributed storage systems at AWS - infrastructure that is foundational to how AWS runs. EC2 instance launches, cross-region disaster recovery, and backup workflows across AWS all depend on what we build.
We're looking for a Software Development Engineer to help us design, build, and operate the systems behind EBS Snapshots - from control plane APIs and large-scale data movement to storage lifecycle management. You'll tackle challenges involving consistency at scale, cross-region data operations, and building services that millions of customers rely on every day.
We operate infrastructure in the critical path for AWS and regularly collaborate across organizational boundaries to deliver for customers. If you want your engineering decisions to have real impact at AWS scale, we'd love to talk.
Key job responsibilities
As an SDE on the EBS Snapshots team, you will:
- Design, implement, and operate distributed services that handle data operations at AWS scale across multiple regions
- Own features end-to-end - from design and implementation through testing, deployment, and launch
- Contribute to system architecture decisions, balancing trade-offs between performance, availability, durability, and cost
- Collaborate with engineers across multiple teams to deliver cross-service integrations and platform improvements
- Drive improvements including performance optimizations, infrastructure modernization, and technical debt reduction
- Write and review design documents, participate in code reviews, and raise the bar for engineering quality
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a team culture of continuous learning and improvement

A day in the life
No two days look the same. You might spend the morning designing a new API capability, the afternoon debugging a latency issue across a distributed system, and end the day reviewing a teammate's design document.
You'll work with engineers across your team and across AWS to solve problems that don't always have clear answers - from building customer-facing features to optimizing system performance to delivering cross-team integrations in unfamiliar codebases.
We value engineers who are curious, pragmatic, and comfortable with ambiguity. You'll have real ownership from day one.
About the team
EBS Snapshots is foundational to how AWS operates. Our team builds and operates the distributed systems that customers across AWS rely on for backup, disaster recovery, and data protection.
Engineers here get real ownership, work on problems at massive scale, and regularly collaborate across AWS to deliver for customers. We balance shipping impactful features with investing in long-term system health.
We're intentional about building a welcoming team culture, and we're looking for someone curious, empathetic, and motivated to help amplify that.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
