What is an intern psychological assessment?

Intern Psychological Assessment positions are training roles for graduate students or early-career professionals in psychology, typically within clinical, counseling, or educational settings. These interns assist licensed psychologists in administering, scoring, and interpreting psychological tests to evaluate clients’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. The internship provides supervised, hands-on experience in assessment techniques, report writing, and feedback delivery. These positions are essential for meeting professional licensure requirements and help interns develop critical skills for their future careers as psychologists.

What types of supervision and mentorship can an intern psychological assessment expect during their internship?

As an Intern in Psychological Assessment, you can expect to receive regular supervision from licensed psychologists who guide your assessment techniques, case conceptualization, and ethical practices. Supervision typically includes weekly one-on-one meetings, feedback on your assessment reports, and opportunities to discuss complex cases. Many programs also facilitate group supervision or case conferences, fostering peer learning and professional development. This supportive environment is designed to help you build confidence and competence as you progress toward independent practice.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern psychological assessment, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern in Psychological Assessment, you generally need a background in psychology, familiarity with assessment theories, and enrollment in or completion of relevant graduate coursework. Experience with standardized testing tools, scoring software, and knowledge of ethical guidelines are typically required. Strong observational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns excel in client interactions and teamwork. These competencies ensure accurate assessments, ethical practice, and contribute to clients’ well-being and organizational effectiveness.

psychologist, gaining practical skills in assessment, intervention, and case management, while

essentially bridging the gap between classroom learning and professional practice with intensive
supervision and feedback. Students will learn to collaborate with a team of professionals to

years.
Supervised practice:
A licensed psychologist acts as a site supervisor, providing ongoing feedback, guidance,
and mentorship throughout the practicum experience.

Students will be assigned a caseload of clients, learning to manage their schedules,
documentation, and ethical considerations related to client care.
Skill development:
Focus on developing skills in areas like clinical interviewing, psychological assessment,
diagnosis, treatment planning, intervention delivery, crisis management, and professional
communication.
Ethical considerations:
Students will be expected to adhere to the ethical guidelines set by the American
Psychological Association (APA) in all interactions with clients.
Reflection and evaluation:
Regular supervision sessions will include discussion of case presentations, self-reflection
on clinical skills, and evaluation of progress towards competency development.
Application Process:
Students interested in a Practicum Placement with EVSC should submit a letter of interest and
a letter of recommendation to Dr. Melissa Umali (melissa.umali@evsck12.com) and Mrs.
Brenna Kelley (brenna.kelley@evsck12.com). Dr. Umali and/or Brenna Kelley will then reach
out to share the next steps in the application process.
