What is a school psychology intern?

School psychology interns are graduate students in school psychology programs who are completing a supervised internship as part of their training. During this period, they work under the supervision of a licensed school psychologist, gaining hands-on experience in providing assessments, counseling, and intervention services to students. This internship is a critical step toward becoming a certified or licensed school psychologist, allowing interns to apply their academic knowledge in real-world educational settings. Their work often involves collaborating with teachers, parents, and administrators to support students' academic, social, and emotional well-being.

How do school psychology interns typically collaborate with teachers and parents during their internship?

School Psychology Interns often work closely with teachers and parents to support students' academic and behavioral needs. They participate in meetings such as IEP (Individualized Education Program) and parent-teacher conferences, where they share assessment results and recommend interventions. Interns also consult with teachers to help implement strategies in the classroom and may facilitate communication between school staff and families to ensure everyone is working toward common goals for the student. This collaborative approach is essential for fostering a supportive learning environment and gaining practical experience in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a school psychology intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a School Psychology Intern, you need foundational knowledge in psychological assessment, counseling techniques, and educational interventions, supported by enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program. Familiarity with assessment tools (e.g., WISC-V, BASC-3), special education law, and student information systems is typically required. Strong communication, cultural competence, and collaboration skills help interns effectively support students, families, and school staff. These competencies are crucial for accurately identifying student needs, providing appropriate interventions, and fostering a positive educational environment.
