Space Operations Intern

Wyvern

Edmonton, AB • On-site, Remote

Full-time, Contractor, Internship

Posted 12 days ago

Job description

Wyvern is making something big. Our vision is to provide actionable intelligence from space, anywhere in the solar system. To achieve this we need to reimagine how satellite Earth observation is done entirely.

We’re a rapidly growing space company in Western Canada, powered by humans who are passionate about space and are redesigning the satellite to enable a sustainable future for humanity. Wyvern has been through Y Combinator's Winter 2022 batch and has raised >USD$30M in pre-seed, seed, and non-dilutive funding. If you’re excited about creating a better earth from space we want you on our team.

WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON

Wyvern is developing telescopes to capture better hyperspectral imagery from space. Hyperspectral images contain more colours than other types of imagery, meaning these images capture the spectral signature of your crop or forest, for example.

With hyperspectral imagery, however, it’s hard to get quality images with a high signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. To mitigate this, and as part of our long-term vision, we’re designing telescopes that are compact on launch and deploy in space, meaning we pack better performance in a smaller, cheaper-to-launch package. In the meantime we have a constellation of satellites – nicknamed Dragonette – that are delivering the highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral images on the market to our customers.

As an entry level role at Wyvern, we’re looking for a Space Operations Intern to support our Dragonette satellites scheduling, perform some basic image processing steps, and help get those images to our customers in a timely manner. This is an excellent opportunity for someone eager to start their career in the space industry and offers room to grow as Wyvern expands its constellation and incorporates more satellite operations in-house.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

  • You have recently completed 2nd or 3rd year in engineering, physics, or related technical program
  • You must be a citizen or resident of, or currently legally authorized to work in, Canada.
  • You are comfortable with handling high-volume, detailed-oriented tasks with efficiency and can establish a routine
  • You have demonstrated the ability to implement priorities in scheduling tasks and operations in consultation with stakeholders
  • You are very organized and have experience prioritizing tasks
  • You have experience producing reports or dashboards and know how to effectively monitor the status of a project
  • You have demonstrated experience with Python, shell scripting, or similar
  • You have experience in implementing and optimizing automated workflows that improve productivity and accuracy
  • You have demonstrated the ability to cooperate with others in a team environment and consider yourself a good communicator
  • You are able to independently solve problems and are an analytical thinker
  • You are known to bring energy and passion to every project, contributing to a motivating work environment

Preferred candidates will also bring:

  • Experience with Satellite Tool Kit (STK);
  • Experience with GIS software;
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience with satellite systems or space operations

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Accountable for creation and approval of daily imaging schedules for our Dragonette satellite constellation, ensuring maximum utilization;
  • Implement priorities in scheduling and operations in consultation with our Sales, Finance, Software and other internal stakeholders;
  • Monitor, document, and otherwise communicate the status of imagery requests;
  • Prepare detailed reports on satellite health, performance metrics, and operational incidents and communicate them to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Perform quality-assurance checks on the data requested from the Dragonette satellites;
  • Process incoming imagery for Wyvern’s data library and for customers. This includes things like geolocation;
  • Improve or otherwise optimize mission operations automation to improve the efficiency of scheduling, QA, or other process;
  • Support longer term capacity planning and feasibility studies;
  • And more as the incumbent and role develop! As part of a small startup team you’ll find yourself working across the board to support Wyvern’s activities.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM WYVERN

  • While this position is full-time, working hours are flexible. Some travel for team events may be required.
  • Wyvern is a small but mighty team, you’ll get the support and mentorship of the entire organization.
  • We’re small but rapidly growing; you’ll see what it’s like to work in a startup.
  • This is a 4 or 8 month position beginning September 2026.
  • Compensation will be around $22-26 CAD/hour depending on qualifications.
