Interim Library information

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in an interim library role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in interim library roles often face challenges such as quickly adapting to a new library’s systems, building rapport with staff and patrons, and maintaining continuity of services during transitions. It’s essential to rapidly familiarize yourself with local policies, workflows, and community needs, while also communicating openly with team members to ensure a smooth handover. Flexibility and strong organizational skills help address these challenges, as does seeking support from permanent staff and leveraging available documentation.

What is an Interim Library?

An Interim Library is a temporary library facility or service set up to provide access to library resources and support while a permanent library is being constructed, renovated, or is otherwise unavailable. These libraries often offer essential services such as book lending, computer access, and research assistance in a scaled-down or alternative setting. They help maintain continuity of services for the community, students, or staff during transitions or emergencies. Interim Libraries can be located in temporary buildings, modular units, or shared spaces and are designed to be flexible and adaptable to meet immediate needs.
