Is ICD coding difficult?

ICD coding is a specialized skill required for insurance coders, involving understanding medical terminology and coding guidelines. It can be challenging initially due to the complexity of medical conditions and the need for accuracy, but with training and practice, proficiency improves. Many coders use coding manuals and software tools to assist in the process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Insurance Coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Insurance Coder, you need a thorough understanding of medical terminology, ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, usually backed by a relevant certification such as CPC or CCS. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, coding software, and claim submission platforms is essential. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently are vital soft skills in this remote role. These skills ensure accurate coding, timely billing, and compliance with healthcare regulations, which directly impact reimbursement and minimize claim denials.

Is AI replacing medical coders?

AI technology is increasingly used to assist medical coders by automating routine coding tasks and improving accuracy. However, human medical coders are still essential for complex cases, quality assurance, and interpreting nuanced medical documentation. The role of an insurance coder remains valuable, especially with skills in coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and ongoing training to adapt to technological advancements.

What are some common challenges faced by remote insurance coders, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote insurance coders often face challenges such as staying updated with frequent coding guideline changes, maintaining productivity without in-person supervision, and ensuring secure handling of sensitive patient data from home. To manage these, it's important to regularly participate in virtual training sessions, use secure VPN connections for accessing healthcare systems, and set a structured daily routine. Open communication with team members and supervisors via collaboration tools also helps address questions quickly and maintain coding accuracy.

Do insurance companies hire coders?

Yes, insurance companies hire medical coders to review and assign codes to healthcare services for billing and reimbursement purposes. These roles often require knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT, and some positions may be remote or require certification. Insurance coding is essential for accurate claims processing and compliance.

What is the difference between Insurance Coder Remote vs Medical Biller Remote?

While both Insurance Coder Remote and Medical Biller Remote roles work in healthcare and often share certifications, their primary responsibilities differ. Insurance coders focus on assigning accurate medical codes, whereas medical billers handle billing submissions and claims management. Both roles are essential in healthcare revenue cycle management and are commonly performed remotely.

What pays more, CCS or CPC?

In the field of insurance coding, CPC (Certified Professional Coder) typically offers higher salaries than CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) because it covers a broader range of coding for outpatient and physician services. CPCs often work in outpatient settings and may require knowledge of both medical coding and billing, which can lead to higher earning potential. Salary differences can vary based on experience, location, and employer, but generally, CPC certification is associated with higher pay for insurance coders.

What are Insurance Coders and what do they do in a remote role?

Insurance Coders, also known as medical coders, are professionals who review medical records and assign standardized codes to diagnoses and procedures for billing and insurance purposes. In a remote position, Insurance Coders work from home using secure online systems to access healthcare documentation and ensure accurate coding according to industry standards like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS. Their work helps healthcare providers receive proper reimbursement from insurance companies while ensuring compliance with regulations. Attention to detail and knowledge of medical terminology are essential in this role.

Job description

Job Description - Senior Software Engineer

Reports To - Engineering Manager

Summary

AxisCare is hiring a full-time, fully remote Senior Software Engineer to help us build, ship, and maintain the market-leading SaaS platform powering the home care industry, and to help us reimagine how software gets made in the age of AI.

We're no longer building the car by hand, so to speak. We're building the factory that makes great cars, with humans in the loop where the human touch matters most. (Read more about how we think AI is changing product development.)

We're looking for engineers who've already internalized this shift. Engineers who push AI tools to their breaking point, then push again three months later when the models improve. Engineers who move from idea to working software in hours instead of weeks, and who bring the judgment to know when the output is actually good.

There will always be a need for people who deeply understand our customers' most important problems, solve them with high-quality software, and run that software reliably in production. That's the work that endures, and that's the work we're hiring for.

What You'll Do

Collaborate with product leaders to spike on possibilities and prototype aggressively, often putting working software in front of stakeholders before the old process would have finished a PRD, then quickly iterate from there.

Mentor junior and mid-level engineers in code design, systems thinking, and driving AI agents effectively: when to trust output, when to throw it out, and how to maintain code quality when the machine is doing the typing.

Write backend business logic, extend our API, integrate with third-party services, build frontend UI, and tackle issues throughout the codebase. All using AI fluently as a force multiplier, not a crutch.

Improve system performance and resilience, upgrade our tech stack, and go after the pipe dreams that used to be too expensive to try.

Own what you ship in production. Home care agencies rely on our software to run their business every day, so we instrument, observe, and debug what we build. We treat reliability as a first-class feature, not an afterthought.

What We're Looking For

A product-minded engineer who deeply interrogates user problems before jumping to solutions. AI makes it dangerously easy to build the wrong thing quickly.

Asystems thinker who looks beyond the element at hand to the broader system and the dynamics at play within it.

AnAI power user with substance. You've moved past "I tried Cursor once." You drive agents to carry out real intent on real codebases, have opinions about where today's models break down drawn from real experience, and have habits for catching those failures before they ship.

Aquality-conscious builder. High-quality software is both valuable to the business now and easy to change later.AI lets us change software quickly, which makes the "easy to change later" part more important than ever.

Astrong writer. Remote work demands it, clear writing is clear thinking, and clear thinking is how you get the biggest impact from AI.

Ateam leadfor 1-2 engineers, but also fully capable of taking substantial features from concept to completion solo.

Experience required:

  • 5+ years as a professional software engineer on teams building full stack cloud-native web apps. Ideally with PHP, but any object-oriented language works too.
  • React apps in TypeScript
  • Experience building well-structured, readily comprehensible, easily maintainable software that balances practicality with elegance
  • MySQL, using both PHP-based ORMs and raw SQL
  • Designing and building RESTful APIs, and integrating with third-party APIs
  • Able to work remotely from the Eastern, Central, or Mountain time zones
  • Qualified to work in the United States or Canada

What We'd Be Excited to Find

  • Experience building HIPAA-compliant software
  • Experience with EMR/EHR systems used in clinical care
  • Concrete examples of AI-enabled workflows you've built that meaningfully changed how your team ships. Custom agents, evals, prompt libraries, internal tooling, etc.

Working Conditions

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals

Compensation and Equipment

  • Salary (TBD based on job experience and skill level)
  • Medical insurance is covered in full for the employee (Medical, Dental and Vision)
  • Company will provide laptop and other needed computer equipment

How to Apply

Apply with a brief resume and either a written or video cover letter.

We review the cover letter before anything else in your application, so this really matters. This is your single biggest opportunity to improve your chances, and video submissions go right to the front of the line.

Prompt:Tell us about something you're proud to have built. Tell us how AI has changed the way you work in the last six to twelve months with specific examples. Tell us why this position is the one you've been hoping to find.

Written:No more than 600 words. We're looking for clarity of thought and strong communication. Use AI if you want, but don't send slop.

Video:1-2 minutes, linked in the "Website, Blog, or Portfolio" section of your application. Doesn't need to be highly produced. We care about how you think and communicate.

We strongly encourage candidates from all backgrounds and every walk of life to apply. Every person on our team brings their own unique perspective, and it's what makes our products better and our work more rewarding. We're eager to support you so that you can ship work you're proud of.

Candidates only. No recruiters, please.
