Job description

Accounting Manager

Atlas Excavating bids and builds the work most contractors avoid: deep sanitary sewer, wet excavation, groundwater control, bypass pumping, and heavy underground utilities. As the business continues to grow in size and complexity, we are strengthening our accounting and finance team.

We are looking for a hands-on Accounting Manager who can bring structure, ownership, and execution discipline to the accounting function.

Purpose of the Role

The Accounting Manager will help support and scale Atlas's accounting function by leading month-end close, improving general ledger accuracy, strengthening accounting processes, and ensuring timely, reliable reporting.

This role supports the Controller and works closely with accounting, operations, and project administration to improve the quality, consistency, and timeliness of financial information.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate the month-end close process ensuring general ledger accuracy, including account reconciliations, journal entries, and discrepancy resolution, with a goal of completing close within5-7 business days.
  • Improve accounting processes by identifying inefficiencies in reporting, data flow, ERP usage, reconciliations, approval workflows, and month-end procedures.
  • Support the Controller and Operations team with accurate and timely job cost information by reviewing project-related data for accuracy and completeness, supporting WIP schedule preparation, and ensuring project financial information is organized and available on time.
  • Assist the Controller with monthly financial reporting packages.
  • Strengthen internal controls around transaction coding, approvals, reconciliations, supporting documentation, and accounting deadlines.
  • Support external audit, tax, and compliance processes by preparing documentation, maintaining accessible supporting schedules, and responding to audit and tax information requests.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation, review, and filing of federal, state, and local payroll and sales/use tax returns, in coordination with internal staff and outside advisors as applicable.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation schedules, disposals, equipment additions, and asset reconciliations.
  • Provide leadership and backup support for payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable during staff absences, high-volume periods, or process issues, while helping resolve day-to-day accounting matters efficiently.
  • Help lead, train, and support accounting team members by clarifying responsibilities, improving workflows, and promoting accountability within the department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including month-end close, reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger review.
  • Experience with job cost, project accounting, or project-based accounting systems.
  • Strong understanding of balance sheet schedules, accruals, fixed assets, and accounting process discipline.
  • Strong Excel and Accounting/ERP system skills.
  • Ability to identify errors, resolve discrepancies, improve workflows, and follow through on deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with accounting, operations, and leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Construction accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with WIP schedules, percentage-of-completion accounting, retainage, or construction billing preferred.
  • Experience with payroll tax, sales/use tax, fixed assets, and audit support preferred.
  • Experience improving accounting processes, reporting, data flow, or ERP workflows.
