What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an infrastructure solutions engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infrastructure Solutions Engineer, you need a strong background in systems architecture, network administration, and cloud computing, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like VMware, AWS, Azure, scripting languages, and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or AWS Certified Solutions Architect is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively make someone stand out in this role. These competencies ensure that complex infrastructure solutions are designed, implemented, and maintained efficiently to meet organizational needs.

What is an infrastructure solutions engineer?

Infrastructure Solutions Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and manage the foundational technology systems that support an organization's operations. They focus on ensuring that hardware, software, networks, and cloud services work together seamlessly to meet business needs. Their responsibilities often include evaluating technology requirements, developing scalable infrastructure solutions, troubleshooting complex issues, and optimizing system performance. By bridging the gap between technical requirements and business goals, Infrastructure Solutions Engineers play a crucial role in maintaining efficient and secure IT environments.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Solutions Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectInfrastructure Solutions EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, Cisco certifications, cloud certificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning and implementing infrastructure solutions, working with cloud and on-premise systemsManaging and maintaining network hardware, troubleshooting network issues
Industry UsageIT, cloud providers, enterprise infrastructureTelecommunications, enterprise IT, data centers

While both roles involve networking and infrastructure, the Infrastructure Solutions Engineer focuses on designing comprehensive infrastructure solutions, including cloud integration, whereas the Network Engineer primarily manages and troubleshoots network hardware and connectivity. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus.

What are some common challenges infrastructure solutions engineers face when integrating new technologies into existing systems?

Infrastructure Solutions Engineers often encounter challenges related to compatibility and scalability when introducing new technologies into established IT environments. These challenges can include ensuring seamless integration with legacy systems, minimizing downtime during transitions, and maintaining robust security throughout the process. Successful engineers collaborate closely with network administrators, developers, and security teams to plan and test integrations, troubleshoot unexpected issues, and document solutions. Proactive communication and a thorough understanding of both old and new systems are key to overcoming these hurdles.

Overview

Job Purpose

The Infrastructure Solutions Architecture (ISA) group at Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) is a cross-disciplined team that takes a full-stack view on solution development. ISA participates in defining high-level functional and non-functional requirements, analyzes technical trade-offs, and helps define the interfaces, collaborations, and dependencies between major components and subsystems. Working across the entire ICE portfolio, the team leads technology investigations, recommends solutions, and plays a critical role in aligning teams around a common technical direction through standards, governance, and architecture guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and define infrastructure standards, reusable reference architecture patterns, and Enterprise Architecture Guidance in the form of Design Patterns, Standards, and Implementation Guides
  • Design resilient infrastructure solutions with a focus on scalability, reliability, availability, performance, and security, including alignment with perimeter security architecture and design standards
  • Oversee the upkeep and consistency of standards as expressed in Global Design Specifications
  • Partner closely with ISA Innovation, ISA Assurance, and ICE Enterprise PMO to maintain a feedback loop on new business requirements, challenges, and delivery timelines
  • Identify gaps in current enterprise guiding principles and policies, and maintain continued knowledge of business and IT architecture principles to evaluate alternative solutions
  • Create diagrams and documentation covering all components of IT systems, including network topology, security measures, and vulnerabilities; conduct proof-of-concept evaluations in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Provide governance recommendations for all existing cloud services and methodologies
  • Ensure logging and monitoring are well understood and implemented in accordance with regulations
  • Maintain continued education and certification in relevant areas of expertise

Knowledge and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience designing infrastructure architectures for global enterprises
  • Hands-on experience with RedHat OpenShift (OCP) and Kubernetes (K8s) at enterprise scale
  • Experience with current-generation workload hosting frameworks such as RunAI, Proxmox, or equivalent
  • Strong HW/OS systems background across storage, servers, and Linux and Windows TCP/IP stacks
  • Working knowledge of L2/L3 networking, virtualization, and general IT systems
  • Automation experience leveraging Ansible, Terraform, or equivalent Infrastructure as Code tooling
  • Scripting proficiency in Python, PowerShell, or Perl with demonstrated delivery
  • Experience in a DevSecOps environment with automated pipelines integrating security controls
  • Experience with cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, or GCP, with depth in at least one provider
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied Sciences, or a related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present to cross-functional teams and director-level leadership

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • Previous experience in Systems Architecture or Engineering
  • Prior experience in a low-latency environment such as financial services or capital markets
  • Knowledge of architecture frameworks such as TOGAF or ITIL
  • Familiarity with enterprise security design patterns and core principles including access control, least privilege, and data integrity
  • Experience in identity, authentication, and information security domains
  • Knowledge of global security frameworks and standards such as NIST, CIS, and FIPS
  • Industry certifications are considered an asset, including CISSP, CISA, GIAC, CCSP, CCNA, CCNP, or cloud provider certifications
