What Is an Infrastructure Engineer?

An infrastructure engineer ensures that their organization’s computer network infrastructure functions properly. As an infrastructure engineer, you monitor computer systems, improve IT applications, and troubleshoot infrastructure problems. Exact job responsibilities vary widely depending on the employer, but typical duties involve working with storage and hosting technologies, monitoring computer software and hardware, installing servers, and developing cloud-based infrastructure. Infrastructure engineer positions are available in all industries, especially those with a heavy reliance on technology. This career requires extensive experience working with computers and the ability to stay current with emerging technologies and trends.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Infrastructure Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Infrastructure Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking, operating systems, cloud platforms, and infrastructure architecture, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like AWS, Azure, VMware, automation frameworks (e.g., Ansible, Terraform), and relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or CompTIA Network+ is typical. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help you collaborate across IT and business units and respond effectively to incidents. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring system reliability, security, and scalability in complex technology environments.

What are some common challenges Infrastructure Engineers face when managing large-scale systems?

Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring system scalability, maintaining high availability, and minimizing downtime during updates or incidents. Managing complex environments requires balancing security, performance, and cost efficiency while supporting rapid growth or changes in business needs. Effective communication and collaboration with development, security, and operations teams are also crucial to address issues quickly and maintain seamless service delivery.

What are Infrastructure Engineers?

Infrastructure Engineers are IT professionals responsible for designing, building, managing, and maintaining the foundational technology systems that support organizations. This includes servers, networks, storage, virtualization, and cloud resources. Their main goal is to ensure a reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure that enables business operations and supports application needs. They often collaborate with other IT teams to implement new technologies, troubleshoot issues, and optimize system performance.

What is the difference between Infrastructure Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectInfrastructure EngineerNetwork Engineer

Job description

Overview

The Infrastructure Engineer on the Mission Control team plays a critical role in building, operating, and evolving the cloud infrastructure that supports reliable, secure, and scalable product delivery. This role is responsible for turning platform needs, application requirements, and operational constraints into well-automated infrastructure and developer workflows.

Working across cloud infrastructure, DevOps, and production operations, this individual partners closely with Engineering, Product, Security, Data, and domain Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to ensure teams can ship quickly without compromising reliability, security, or compliance.

This role contributes to the development and evolution of core systems, spanning cloud environments, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, containerized workloads, observability, secrets management, networking, data infrastructure, and deployment automation within a regulated, high-stakes environment. Success requires strong systems thinking, pragmatic engineering judgment, and a bias toward automation and repeatability.

The Infrastructure Engineer is expected to operate in an AI-native engineering environment, using modern coding agents, automation tools, and rapid prototyping workflows to improve delivery speed and infrastructure quality. In parallel, this individual will help create the foundation for AI-enabled product capabilities by ensuring the underlying systems are dependable, observable, secure, and easy for engineers to use.

This is a fully remote position that offers a competitive salary range of $140,000 to $240,000 USD, plus an annual bonus. You'll also receive our excellent benefits package, which includes medical coverage starting on day one and a company-matched 401(k). Compensation may vary based on experience, location, and other job-related factors.

Responsibilities

Cloud Infrastructure & Platform Engineering

  • Design, build, and operate cloud infrastructure across major platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure with a focus on reliability, scalability, security, and cost discipline
  • Create reusable infrastructure patterns that help product teams provision, deploy, and operate services consistently
  • Own infrastructure changes from design and implementation through production rollout, monitoring, and iteration

Infrastructure as Code & Automation

  • Build and maintain infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, Bicep, CloudFormation, or similar frameworks
  • Automate repeatable operational workflows, environment provisioning, configuration management, and deployment tasks
  • Improve infrastructure quality through clear modules, versioning, documentation, testing, and review practices

DevOps & Developer Experience

  • Partner with Engineering teams to improve CI/CD pipelines, release workflows, build systems, and deployment safety
  • Reduce friction for developers by building self-service tools, templates, runbooks, and paved-path workflows
  • Balance speed and control so teams can move quickly while maintaining strong production and change-management practices

Reliability, Observability & Production Operations

  • Operate production systems confidently, including deployments, incident response, troubleshooting, and post-incident follow-up
  • Implement and improve observability across logs, metrics, traces, alerts, dashboards, and service health indicators
  • Contribute to architecture and operational decisions that improve uptime, performance, resilience, and maintainability
  • Identify and address reliability risks before they become customer-impacting issues

Security, Compliance & Cost Discipline

  • Implement secure infrastructure patterns, access controls, secrets management, and least-privilege practices
  • Support compliance-aware engineering practices appropriate for a regulated fintech environment
  • Monitor infrastructure utilization and cost, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency without reducing reliability

Culture & Craft

  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, curiosity, pragmatism, and engineering excellence
  • Raise the bar through thoughtful automation, clear abstractions, strong documentation, and sound operational judgment

Qualifications
  • 3-5+ years of experience building, operating, and improving production infrastructure or DevOps platforms
  • Strong experience with one or more major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including compute, networking, storage, IAM, and managed services
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, preferably Terraform or a comparable framework, and a strong understanding of reusable infrastructure modules
  • Experience with CI/CD systems, deployment automation, release workflows, and modern DevOps practices
  • Comfort working with containers and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or similar platforms
  • Ability to write scripts or production-quality automation in Python, Go, Rust, Bash, TypeScript, or a similar language
  • Experience operating production systems with observability tools, alerting, incident response, runbooks, and post-incident improvement practices
  • Working knowledge of cloud security fundamentals, including IAM, network segmentation, secrets management, encryption, and secure configuration practices
  • Comfort working with data-heavy, integration-heavy, and operationally critical systems in production
  • Good judgment in ambiguous environments where the path is not fully defined and the team needs to go from zero to one
  • Clear communication skills with both technical and non-technical teammates

Preferred Experience

  • Experience building infrastructure, internal platforms, or developer tools for fast-moving product engineering teams
  • Experience in fintech, mortgage, lending, payments, insurance, or other regulated domains
  • Experience supporting AI and data infrastructure, including secure access to model platforms, data pipelines, vector databases, or GPU-enabled workloads
  • Experience improving developer velocity, cloud cost efficiency, production reliability, or deployment safety as systems grow
