What Does an Industrial Design Intern Do?

An industrial design intern is an entry-level position that involves assisting designers and engineers as they plan industrial products, test design concepts, and work on prototype building. As an industrial design intern, your goal is to gain valuable skills and on-the-job experience to help you qualify for industrial design career opportunities. Your responsibilities vary based on the needs of your employer but may include using a computer model to test designs, collecting data on such tests, and operating rendering software to visualize designs. Your supervisor may also assign you the task of assembling a prototype based on engineering designs.

What key skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an Industrial Design Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Industrial Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, sketching, and 3D modeling, typically supported by a degree or coursework in industrial or product design. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SolidWorks, or Rhino is often required, along with familiarity with prototyping tools. Creativity, strong communication, and the ability to accept and incorporate feedback are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills help interns contribute effectively to design projects, collaborate with teams, and develop innovative, user-centered products.

What types of projects can an Industrial Design Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Industrial Design Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that may include concept development, 3D modeling, prototyping, and user research. Interns often assist with brainstorming sessions, create sketches and renderings, and help prepare presentations for client reviews. You'll likely collaborate closely with experienced designers, engineers, and marketing teams to bring ideas to life and gain insight into the entire product development process. This hands-on experience helps interns build a strong portfolio and understand real-world design challenges.
