An industrial design intern is an entry-level position that involves assisting designers and engineers as they plan industrial products, test design concepts, and work on prototype building. As an industrial design intern, your goal is to gain valuable skills and on-the-job experience to help you qualify for industrial design career opportunities. Your responsibilities vary based on the needs of your employer but may include using a computer model to test designs, collecting data on such tests, and operating rendering software to visualize designs. Your supervisor may also assign you the task of assembling a prototype based on engineering designs.

To thrive as an Industrial Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of design principles, sketching, and 3D modeling, typically supported by a degree or coursework in industrial or product design. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, SolidWorks, or Rhino is often required, along with familiarity with prototyping tools.
