What is indirect purchasing?

Indirect purchasing refers to the procurement of goods and services that are not directly incorporated into a company's finished products but are necessary for daily operations. These can include office supplies, maintenance services, IT equipment, travel expenses, and other overhead costs. Indirect purchasing helps businesses manage costs, improve efficiency, and support core activities by ensuring non-production needs are met in a cost-effective manner.

What are some common challenges faced in an indirect purchasing role, and how can they be managed?

In Indirect Purchasing, professionals often encounter challenges such as managing a diverse supplier base, balancing cost savings with quality and service requirements, and ensuring compliance with company policies. Additionally, indirect spend categories like IT, marketing, or facilities can be complex due to rapidly changing needs and numerous stakeholders. Building strong cross-functional relationships and leveraging data-driven decision-making are key strategies to address these challenges and drive value for the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an indirect purchasing specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Indirect Purchasing Specialist, you need strong analytical abilities, negotiation skills, and a background in supply chain management or business, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with procurement software like SAP Ariba, Oracle Procurement Cloud, and experience with contract management systems are typically required. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills help professionals collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and suppliers. These skills ensure cost-effective purchasing decisions, compliance with company policies, and efficient support for non-production goods and services.

What is the difference between Indirect Purchasing vs Direct Purchasing?

In contrast, Direct Purchasing focuses on procuring raw materials and components essential for manufacturing products. Both roles require procurement skills and certifications but differ in their scope and work environment.

What skills are needed for indirect purchasing?

Indirect purchasing professionals need strong negotiation, communication, and analytical skills to effectively manage supplier relationships and evaluate costs. Knowledge of procurement processes, familiarity with procurement software, and the ability to work within budgets and deadlines are also important for success in this role.

Job Description

We made history and now we work to transform the future – for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.

The Ford Purchasing team adds critical value to the entire organization. You’ll help us source the highest quality parts and services from around the globe while ensuring optimal cost and on‑time delivery. You’ll also contribute to establishing a robust supply chain so that we can continually produce the vehicles our customers want.

In this position...

We are seeking a highly adaptable, data-driven, and proactive professional to join our team as the Indirect Program Strategy & Analytics Lead. This is a high‑visibility, "dual-hat" role that combines strategic operational excellence with hands‑on sourcing execution.

You will lead the development of the Indirect Program Management Process, leveraging advanced data analytics and Power BI to build robust dashboards that communicate the health, spend, and milestones of indirect programs to top‑level leadership. Simultaneously, you will drive project management for key initiatives and serve as an indirect program buyer when required—ensuring the on‑time sourcing of indirect goods and services.

This role offers a unique runway for career growth, strategic influence, and immediate business impact.

  • Shape the Future of Procurement: You will be at the forefront of transforming our sourcing practices, directly contributing to operational excellence, cost savings, and waste elimination.
  • Dual-Role Growth: Expand both your technical/analytical capabilities and your hands‑on commercial procurement skills, making you a highly versatile leader within the Supply Chain organization.
  • High-Level Visibility: Your Power BI dashboards and strategic project updates will directly inform and guide decisions made by global purchasing and plant leadership.
Responsibilities

What you'll do...

Data Analytics & Business Intelligence (High Emphasis)

  • Dashboards & Visualization: Lead the creation, implementation, and maintenance of advanced Power BI dashboards and data analytic tools to track procurement metrics, program health, and sourcing status.
  • Data-Driven Insights: Collect, cleanse, and analyze complex spending patterns, supplier performance, and KPI data to identify areas for category consolidation, cost savings, and process improvement.
  • Leadership Reporting: Translate complex data sets into clear, actionable insights and high‑impact visual decks to present the overall health of indirect programs to executive leadership.
  • Tool Digitization: Drive the modernization and digitization of Category Business Plans and sourcing forum insights to foster organizational learning and efficiency.

Program & Project Management (High Emphasis)

  • Milestone Ownership: Own the creation, tracking, and maintenance of standard blocked timing, milestones, and project timelines for indirect programs.
  • Risk Mitigation: Proactively identify, track, and mitigate supply chain and project risks to ensure all procurement activities meet strict program milestones for Ford Energy.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Coordinate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations teams early in the program lifecycle to align stakeholder requirements and ensure timely integration.
  • Transformation Initiatives: Lead and participate in cross‑functional task forces (e.g., new ERP system rollouts, process standardization, and business operations improvements) keeping deliverables on scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Ontime Sourcing: Support the program management team to ensure the on‑time sourcing of indirect purchasing categories for different Ford Energy Programs
  • Supplier Performance: Track supplier performance across quality, delivery, and cost metrics, implementing corrective actions and managing supplier relationships to maximize leverage and quality.
  • Systems & Compliance: Utilize and support the implementation of the Purchasing iERP/ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) for the BOBM
Qualifications

You'll have...

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Data Analytics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in indirect purchasing, supply chain, or project management (preferably within a manufacturing or automotive environment).
  • Advanced proficiency in data visualization and analysis tools, specifically Power BI and Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, Power Query), with a proven ability to build dashboards from scratch.
  • Proven experience managing complex, multi‑stakeholder projects and tracking milestones from conception to completion.
  • Experience working within major ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to present data‑driven business cases to senior leadership.
  • Highly flexible with a proactive, problem‑solving mindset and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, rapidly changing launch environment.

Even better, you may have...

Preferred

  • Master Degree
  • Experience in battery manufacturing, electric vehicles (EV), or high‑tech manufacturing industries.
  • Formal Project Management certification (e.g., PMP, CAPM) or Agile/Scrum methodologies.

As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder…or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:

  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp‑up programs, subsidized back‑up child care and more
  • Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
  • Tuition assistance
  • Established and active employee resource groups
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service
  • A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day
  • Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.
