What does an indirect buyer do?

An Indirect Buyer is responsible for procuring non-production goods and services that support a company's operations, such as office supplies, IT equipment, marketing services, and facility maintenance. To excel as an Indirect Buyer, you need a solid understanding of procurement processes, cost analysis, and supply chain management—often backed by a business degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with e-procurement platforms (such as SAP Ariba or Coupa), contract management systems, and potentially certifications like CPSM or CIPS is valuable. Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills help set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for securing the best value on indirect goods and services while effectively collaborating with internal stakeholders and suppliers.

What challenges does an indirect buyer face?

One of the common challenges for Indirect Buyers is managing the procurement of diverse goods and services across multiple departments, each with unique requirements and priorities. Additionally, navigating complex supplier relationships and staying compliant with company procurement policies can present ongoing hurdles. Successful Indirect Buyers proactively seek to understand internal client needs and leverage market data to make well-informed purchasing decisions.
