Description RESIDENCY: Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of your application: Livingston County, or One of the following Counties: Allegany, Genesee, Monroe, Ontario, Steuben or Wyoming RELATED COLLEGE DEGREE: If the applicant is relying on a related college degree to qualify, the applicant must submit a copy of their unofficial college transcript with the application. If the applicant is hired, the applicant will be required to have their official transcript directly sent to the Livingston County Human Resources Department. The original transcript must be received by the Livingston County Human Resources Department before completing the onboarding process.

This is an important administrative position providing direct supervision over a large clerical unit. It requires independent judgment in planning and managing complex clerical activities and independently performing the more responsible and complex functions. The work is performed in accordance with established rules and regulations of the department.

The responsibilities may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and training the subordinate staff. A Principal Typist does related work as required. Examples of Duties Supervises, plans, assigns and reviews clerical work and instructs employees in the details of specialized clerical work; Responsible for approving employees' time off requests and making necessary adjustments to work schedules of the unit; Responsible for employee development and training; Assists the department supervisor in such operational functions as ongoing record retention maintenance, physical moves of personnel and equipment, receiving of forms, supplies and equipment, etc.; May provide clerical support to department supervisor in such areas as keyboarding correspondence, oral and written correspondence with State liaisons, interfacing with office automation systems, maintaining supervisor's program planner on personal computer and distributing to appropriate personnel; May attend weekly staff meetings and act as liaison between unit supervisors and clerical staff; Receives and reviews complaints and assigns necessary follow-up action; and Performs other related duties as required

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; thorough knowledge of modern office machines and ability to apply it to recurring work problems; thorough knowledge of the policies, laws and regulations relating to the programs of the department; good computer skills; good analytical and problem solving skills; ability to plan, direct, supervise and accept responsibility for the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to prepare correspondence and reports; physical condition commensurate to the demands of the position including reaching, bending, lifting and carrying supplies to storage area and mailroom. Typical Qualifications Applicants must meet all requirements for one of the following qualification options in order to be approved for examination and/or appointment: Qualification Option # 1 2 Training/Education Possession of an Associate's Degree[1] from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university in secretarial science, business administration or a related field. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

General experience Two years of full-time, paid clerical experience which involved the use of a personal computer. Four years of full-time, paid clerical experience which involved the use of a personal computer. Supervisory experience None required.

Supplemental Information PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT NOTICE: An individual who receives a provisional appointment must take the examination for the position title on the next occasion it is offered. In order to be eligible for a permanent appointment to the position, the provisional appointee must pass the exam and be ranked 1, 2, 3, or be tied in score with the individual ranked number 3 of those who are willing to accept appointment to the position.

It should be understood that even if the provisional appointee is eligible for appointment, the employer may choose another candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis. Questions regarding provisional appointments should be directed to the Livingston County Human Resources Department. NOTE: Livingston County residency is not a requirement for this position.

However, Livingston County residents will be given preference in the hiring process.
