Job description

Educational and Certification Requirements:

 
  • Bachelor's Degree: A bachelor's degree in special education or a related field. 

  • Master's Degree (often preferred): Many school districts prefer or require a master's degree in special education.

  • State Certification/Licensure: Must hold a valid special education teaching license/certification covering grades K-6.  

  • Knowledge of IEP Development and Implementation: Proficiency in developing, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

 

Skills and Knowledge:

 
  • Differentiated Instruction: Ability to adapt curriculum and teaching methods to meet the diverse learning needs of students with various disabilities.

  • Behavior Management: Expertise in implementing positive behavior supports and interventions (PBIS) and managing challenging behaviors; collecting data for FBAs and Implementing BIPs.

  • Collaboration and Communication: Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with parents, paraprofessionals, general education teachers, therapists, and administrators.

  • Assistive Technology: Knowledge of and ability to use assistive technology to support student learning and independence.

  • Data Collection and Progress Monitoring: Ability to accurately collect and analyze data to track student progress and make data-driven decisions to inform instruction and IEP development.

  • Understanding of Various Disabilities: Knowledge of the characteristics and educational implications of various disabilities, including but not limited to:

     
    • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

    • Speech/Language Disabilities

    • Learning Disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia)

    • Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

    • Other Health Impairments (OHI)
