Ice Rink Manager Responsibilities

Facility Operations

  • Oversee daily operation of the ice rink and surrounding facilities
  • Schedule public skating, hockey, figure skating, lessons, rentals, and special events
  • Ensure ice quality through resurfacing and maintenance coordination
  • Monitor refrigeration, HVAC, lighting, and facility systems
  • Coordinate opening and closing procedures
  • Maintain cleanliness and overall appearance of the facility

Ice Maintenance & Safety

  • Supervise ice resurfacing operations using equipment such as a Zamboni
  • Monitor ice thickness and temperature
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and risk-management policies
  • Conduct routine safety inspections of boards, glass, locker rooms, bleachers, and exits
  • Respond to accidents, injuries, and emergency situations
  • Maintain incident and accident reports

Staff Supervision

  • Hire, train, schedule, and supervise rink employees
  • Manage rink employees; (such as; Zamboni drivers, rink attendants, maintenance staff, cleaners)
  • Conduct employee evaluations and disciplinary actions
  • Ensure staff certifications and training remain current
  • Develop team communication and operational procedures

Customer Service

  • Address customer questions, complaints, and concerns
  • Ensure a safe and enjoyable guest experience
  • Coordinate memberships, rentals, and group bookings
  • Build relationships with local hockey leagues, schools, and skating clubs
  • Support community outreach and promotional programs

Financial Management

  • Prepare and manage budgets
  • Monitor revenue and operating expenses
  • Handle cash management and reporting procedures
  • Approve purchases and vendor contracts
  • Track attendance, sales, and program performance
  • Assist with pricing strategies and financial forecasting

Event & Program Coordination

  • Organize tournaments, competitions, birthday parties, and special events
  • Coordinate ice time allocation among teams and programs
  • Work with coaches, referees, instructors, and league organizers
  • Promote seasonal programs and community events

Compliance & Administration

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Maintain permits, insurance documentation, and operational records
  • Develop policies and emergency action plans
  • Coordinate inspections and regulatory reporting

Marketing & Community Relations

  • Support advertising and social media efforts
  • Promote skating programs and public events
  • Develop partnerships with schools, youth organizations, and sponsors
