Position Purpose: Manhattan Ice Academy is Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department's (MPRD) learn-to-skate program, designed to help participants of all ages become proficient on ice. Ice skating lessons run throughout the length of the ice rink season, on Monday and Tuesday nights and on Saturdays. The program adjusts instructors to the appropriate skill levels of the skaters enrolled. Instructors teach participants to skate according to the program standards.
Job Duties
  • Teach the activities of the skating lesson program.
  • Follow directions from the MPRD supervisor, Ice Rink manager, and Skating Lesson supervisor.
  • Regularly communicate with the lesson supervisor to ensure that all organizational goals are being met.
  • Provide excellent customer service and possess a service philosophy that reflects the MPRD's mission.
  • Establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with other employees,?department personnel, and the public (skaters, parents, etc.). Engage with these individuals in a helpful, courteous, and respectful manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills and Additional Qualifications
  • Knowledge of ice-skating technique, either figure or hockey.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills
  • Training or experience in Early Childhood or Elementary Education.

Other Information
  • This is not a KPERS-covered position. As such, employees in this role will not work beyond 999 hours in a calendar year.
  • Applicants must pass a background check.
  • Staff may be asked to work on weekends and holidays.
  • Ice rink is open October 30, 2026 - February 6, 2027.
  • Staff will be required to attend in-service training.

Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • Work is performed at the Manhattan Ice Rink in City Park.
  • Work performed indoors in cooler temperatures.
  • Work is performed in a team environment composed of cashiers, other attendants, ice skating instructors, lesson supervisors, and ice rink managers.
  • Noise level and activity level will be varied.
  • Stands, walks, sits, uses hands, handles, feels, speaks, hears, climbs stairs, pushes, pulls, or lifts up to 50 pounds.
