What is a human resources assistant contract?

Human Resources Assistant Contract positions are temporary roles within the HR department of an organization. People in these roles support various HR functions such as recruiting, onboarding, maintaining employee records, and assisting with payroll or benefits administration. Contract HR Assistants are typically hired for a specific period, such as to cover for staff on leave or to help during busy times, and may work full-time or part-time. These roles require strong organizational and communication skills, as well as familiarity with HR processes and software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human resources assistant contract?

To thrive as a Human Resources Assistant (Contract), you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of HR principles, often supported by a relevant degree or HR certification. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), applicant tracking systems (ATS), and office software like Microsoft Office is typically required. Excellent communication, discretion, and the ability to multitask are crucial soft skills that set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure efficient HR operations, maintain confidentiality, and support a positive employee experience in a fast-paced environment.

What are some typical challenges a human resources assistant contract faces when working on a contract basis?

You'll work closely with the HR including the recruiting team, learn how a busy department runs, and take real ownership of the work that keeps hiring, onboarding and the overall department moving.

This is a full time onsite position at our Nassau County, NY office, Monday–Friday.

What you will do:

  • Perform general HR administrative duties including, but not limited to, data entry, recordkeeping and auditing
  • Support recruiting by sourcing candidates through job boards, social media, employee referrals, and our internal database
  • Review resumes against role requirements and help the recruiting team identify strong fits
  • Coordinate onboarding: gather new-hire documentation, run reference checks, and set up pre-employment screenings
  • Help organize and staff open houses and job fairs
  • Assist with HRIS tasks and ongoing HR projects
  • Provide other general administrative support for the department, including reception/front door coverage as needed and supply ordering & stocking

What we're looking for:

  • Exposure to an Applicant Tracking System; ADP Recruiting Management a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable juggling priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills
  • Sound judgment and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Solid Word and Excel skills

What we offer:

  • Salary range - $22.00–$24.00 per hour
  • Medical and dental coverage
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off, holidays
  • Plus more!

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and are committed to a drug- and alcohol-free workplace.
