Job description

Full time. 40 hours/week.  Day shift.  Monday -Friday. 8a-430p: Covering all south west Michigan sites

Reports to the Laboratory Manager/Director. Assumes responsibility for monitoring and coordination of the Beacon Health System point-of-care (POC) testing program. Provides coordination of non-waived and waived POC testing to include; establishing, revising, and monitoring policies and procedures for Beacon POC testing program; ensuring that POC testing meets all regulatory requirements for standards; designing organized, well-documented and thorough program for providing assistance to all POC testing user sites, including instrument trouble shooting; developing procedures for detecting unapproved POC testing and maintaining compliance; working with the Point-of-Care Testing Committee, laboratory medical director and lab manager/director to respond to requests for new POC testing equipment.

Assumes responsibility for POC testing for the Beacon hospitals by:

  • Coordinating the development, implementation, and evaluation of the point-of care testing (POCT) program.
  • Developing POCT policies and procedures.
  • Working collaboratively with lab leadership and POCT testing sites to ensure quality and safety as related to performing point-of-care testing by non-lab staff.

Ensures testing personnel are properly trained and competent by:

  • Developing and coordinating an effective POCT education program to include organizing and documenting the required training.
  • Working with members of the healthcare team to ensure training and competency assessment and documentation for both non-laboratory and laboratory staff performing POC testing.
  • Working with POC site managers to identify new users.

Conducts quality assurance activities related to POC testing by:

  • Providing oversight of POC quality control (QC) testing activities to include validation and correlation studies on all POC testing devices according to established protocols.
  • Overseeing POCT QC program, reviewing QC and maintenance records for all test sites and educating non-laboratory staff as needed on test procedures when corrective action is required.
  • Implementing and monitoring IQCP for all non-waived POC testing.
  • Keeping up to date and informing personnel of any manufacturer changes in procedures.
  • Compiling QA data for monthly or quarterly reports to be reviewed by the Quality Assurance Coordinator and Laboratory Manager/Director.
  • Working with POCT sites to ensure POCT activities are compliant with relevant regulatory agencies.
  • Ordering, distributing, tracking, reviewing, and reporting results for required Proficiency Testing materials.
  • Responding to PT exception reports within a specified time frame.
  • Preparing for and participating in all applicable accreditation inspections.

Promotes patient and general safety as it relates to POCT by:

  • Promoting and ensuring safety by assessing and addressing safety needs and issues related to POCT.
  • Educating POCT staff about proper safety and identification procedures when dealing with patients under any circumstance or environment.
  • Educating users to always provide correct and complete patient sample identification from sample collection to result reporting.
  • Educating point-of-care users regarding safety issues related to point-of-care equipment and testing to protect staff and patients from injury and infection by recognizing infection control policies and procedures and practicing safety while testing.

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or in a chemical, physical, or biological science and completion of a CAHEA-accredited Medical Laboratory Science program. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by an appropriate accrediting agency i.e., ASCP, HEW/HHS or equivalent is preferred. A minimum of four years of related clinical laboratory experience required. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Qualifies as a General Supervisor as defined in CFR.493.1461 (high complexity testing) and as a Technical Consultant as defined in CFR.493.1411 (moderate complexity testing).

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of day-to-day operations and policies and procedures of the department. Also requires a solid understanding of user department processes and procedural changes.
  • Requires the technical computer skills and knowledge necessary to effectively use and support various software and hardware. Also demonstrates a working knowledge of database applications and the skills needed to assist with data mining.
  • Requires working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and applicable accrediting agencies.
  • Requires advanced analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to identify problems and deliver solutions in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to communicate effectively with the team members at all levels. Also requires the ability to provide effective training.
  • Requires organization skills and the ability to work independently as assigned, prioritize workload, and handle a variety of multiple and overlapping functions within set deadlines.
  • Demonstrates the leadership skills necessary to elicit cooperation and support from other team members.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an office and/or clinical environment with possible exposure to biohazards and chemicals.
  • May need to vary days and hours scheduled, including working evenings and/or weekends as determined by department need.
  • Must be able to be effective in a fast-paced, quality focused, multi-priority environment that frequently deals with stressful situations and important deadlines and schedules.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to stand for long periods of time, walk short distances, and lift up-to 35 pounds) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also requires visual acuity, normal color perception, and full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
