JOB TITLE: 

Branding Iron Editor  

JOB PURPOSE: 

Lead the overall editorial and production operations of the student newspaper by directing news coverage, managing publication workflow, and ensuring high standards of journalistic excellence. This position supervises editors and designers, oversees print production and visual presentation, fosters collaboration across Student Media platforms, and mentors student journalists while supporting audience engagement and the continued growth of the publication.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Oversees editorial operations for the newspaper 
  2. Directs story development, editorial planning, and publication scheduling
  3. Supervises editors, designers, writers, and photographers
  4. Responsible for newspaper layout, visual presentation and print production
  5. Ensures editorial accuracy, AP style compliance, and publication quality
  6. Coordinates coverage of news, sports, entertainment, features, and opinion content
  7. Oversees copy editing, headline writing, proofreading, and page production
  8. Collaborates with digital and broadcast teams on multimedia storytelling initiatives
  9. Helps train student journalists in reporting, writing, editing, and newsroom practices
  10. Assists with readership growth and audience engagement strategies
  11. Attend weekly meetings with the Supervisor and Student Staff.
  12. The editor is required to work in the office no less than 20 hours each week. The times must be posted and followed.  At least 10 of the 20 hours must be between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.   
  13. Serve as a direct line to adviser, sales manager, production coordinator, and business manager when the coordinator is unavailable. 
  14. Serve as a contact person with Communication and Journalism Department.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Must be a currently enrolled University of Wyoming student with a minimum 2.5 GPA. 
  2. Demonstrated experience in student journalism, newspaper production, or a related media organization. 
  3. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style. 
  4. Experience with page design and newspaper production software (such as Adobe InDesign and the Adobe Creative Suite). 
  5. Demonstrated leadership, organization, and time management skills. 
  6. Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment. 
  7. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and collaborate with fellow students. 
  8. Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by production schedules and news coverage.
  9. Must be available to start work Aug. 24, 2026.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  1. Experience coordinating assignments or leading teams. 
  2. Experience with editorial planning, project management, or newsroom production workflows. 
  3. Familiarity with content management systems, collaborative project management tools, and/or Adobe Creative Cloud. 
  4. Experience in print, digital, photography, video, audio, or social media production. 
  5. Knowledge of journalism ethics, media law and editorial standards.
  6. Demonstrated ability to mentor and support other student staff members.
  7. Knowledge of AP Style, media law, and journalistic ethics.
