Job Title: Per-Diem Senior Clinical Instructor

Job Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology has an opening for a part-time, per diem (hourly) at the faculty rank of Senior Clinical Instructor. The chief responsibility of the department is to assure the best possible outcomes for our patients having surgical operations, painful invasive procedures, and childbirth. The University of Colorado affiliated hospitals have top, nationally recognized physicians delivering the best possible anesthetic care as well as a full range of perioperative care. The anesthesiologist provides specialized care to patients undergoing surgical procedures.

The primary clinical sites for this position are the Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO) hospitals located in the Denver Metro region. This premier hospital system, which has been highly ranked among pediatric hospitals for almost two decades, is a 600-bed tertiary care system, located along the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The flagship hospital is on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado with a level IV NICU and Level 1 pediatric trauma capabilities. With 4 hospitals, 16 network of care locations and more than 500 outreach clinics in over 29 cities, the CHCO network serves the children of Colorado and the 6-state surrounding region

Key Responsibilities:

The attending anesthesiologist administers care alone or supervises physicians-in-training (residents), certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified anesthesiologist assistants, or physician extenders. When working alone, he/she examines the patient before and after anesthesia, writes pre and post anesthesia orders, confirms that the patient is ready for anesthesia before induction, manages the anesthetic period, and follows patient as long as is appropriate in the post anesthesia period.

As an attending anesthesiologist, the candidate may be required to perform these services in the operating room, in the labor and delivery area, in radiology, and in some special procedure areas. Except in specific emergency situations, the administration of anesthesia is limited to areas where anesthesia can be given safely. One or more attendings will be available at all times to provide these services.
As faculty members of the School of Medicine, candidates are also expected to contribute to the teaching needs of the Department and the School. This includes providing hands-on, one-on-one instruction when assigned to work with a trainee in the OR. There are no expectations or requirements to teach outside of the OR.

This position is per diem (hourly, part-time) and will be able to pick up vacant or available shifts at the Children's Hospital Colorado system on the Anschutz Medical Campus or any affiliated hospital locations on a month-to-month basis. Shift availability is determined by the Department. When shifts become available, the per diem attending will be notified and will have the option of picking up the shift or passing on the shift. All shifts will be at least eight hours. 

The candidate must have a strong working and theoretical knowledge of Anesthesiology and Peri-operative Medicine as well as experience in teaching Anesthesiology. All attending anesthesiologists must be licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado. All are expected to be either in the examination process of the American Board of Anesthesiologists ("board eligible") or a Diplomat of the Board, or to be holding certification of foreign training that is recognized as equivalent to its diploma by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the State of Colorado by effective hire date
  • All are expected to be either in the examination process of the American Board of Anesthesiologists ("board eligible") or a Diplomat of the Board, or to be holding certification of foreign training that is recognized as equivalent to its diploma by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
  • Fellowship-trained in Pediatric Anesthesiology 
  • Board certification in pediatric anesthesiology is highly desirable
  • Experience teaching Anesthesiology
  • Currently working as a dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of collaboration and ongoing success.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong working and theoretical knowledge of Anesthesiology and Peri-operative Medicine.
