Job description


Job Description
Supervises and coordinates medical record functions: acquisition and distribution, chart analysis, discharge coding, correspondence processing, quality audits, etc. Facilitates the even work-flow throughout functional areas.
Job Responsibility:
  • Promotes Coding department goals by selecting, motivating, and training capable team members.
  • Leads the activities of assigned Coding team members by communicating and providing guidance toward achieving department objectives.
  • Supervises medical record functions to ensure coding of charts is achieved within targets; supervises, hires, trains, disciplines, and evaluates the performance of staff; ensures performance appraisals are completed in a timely manner.
  • Performs new employee orientation including scheduling, training, and submission; plans, organizes, coordinates, and evaluates staffing requirements to meet operational goals; assigns and schedules direct reports to ensure smooth and efficient workflow.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and implements opportunities for efficiencies; generates department metrics; reports operational performance, justification and/or corrective action.
  • Builds and maintains collection of reference tools including codebooks, groupers, encoders and other software applications, coding guidelines, dictionaries and texts for organization staff; collaborates in the selection, implementation, and operation of electronic coding and documentation improvement software; monitors interfaces with billings systems and workflow changes with computer patient information.
  • Ensures integrity of encoder and abstracting systems by maintenance and revision of data; reviews daily operations backlogs and computer problems; makes recommendations and takes corrective action; collaborates with Education and Training to identify training needs and schedule training activities, including transition.
  • Collaborates with offices and operations; reduces and eliminates account holds.
  • Researches, reviews, and evaluates "Best Practices" for implementation throughout organization; ensures collaboration and communication.
  • Reviews and monitors organization contract services, and ensures system-wide and vendor compliance; reports on issues and makes recommendations for corrective actions; reviews and approves vendor billing information.
  • Audits patient logs, reports, and follows up on inconsistency or accuracy of medical records; ensures inventory of supplies.
  • Performs related duties as required. All responsibilities noted here are considered essential functions of the job under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Duties not mentioned here, but considered related are not essential functions.

Job Qualification
  • Associate's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Current Professional Coder Certification, or Current Coding Professional Certification required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
  • 4-6 years of relevant experience and 0-2 years of leadership / management experience, required.
