Job description

The HIM Coder II is a key member of the HIM team. The HIM Coder II will work under the direction of the Manager of Coding. This position will review documentation in the electronic medical record and assign and sequence ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes, in accordance with the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and in compliance with ICD-10 Official Coding Guidelines and other regulatory requirements. The primary focus of the role is the coding of all inpatients, observation, and surgical accounts. Inpatients will use Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) methodologies, including present on admission indicators, analyzing the medical record documentation for complications and comorbidities. The HIM Coder II will perform physician queries, clarify documentation and complete charge verification, understanding how to apply appropriate CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes for outpatient claims. Proficiently understands and works edits and denials through the claimโ€™s scrubber queues.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

ยท Able to work as a member of a team and also independently.

ยท Understand and follow safe work practices.

ยท Ensure that all Amberwell procedures are followed in accordance with established policies.

Experience:

o Minimum Required Experience: One year of inpatient and surgery coding experience

o Preferred Experience: Two years of progressive inpatient facility coding experience, one year of orthopedic surgery coding experience

ยท Education:

o Minimum Required Education: High school diploma and graduate of a Medical Coding Program

o Preferred Experience: Graduate of a Health Information Technology program

ยท Licenses & Certifications:

o Minimum Required: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)

o Preferred Certifications: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
