Job description

Position Overview
Are you an experienced Project Manager with a strong background in civil construction and a deep understanding of heavy highway projects? Helm is seeking a proactive individual who can successfully manage projects from planning through completion, collaborate with field teams and customers, and deliver exceptional results through effective project leadership.
Our Civil Division is responsible for executing heavy highway construction projects with a focus on earthwork, underground utilities, and infrastructure development. This role will oversee project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and execution while working closely with field teams, clients, subcontractors, and project stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery. This position is part of our Civil Division, located in our Freeport, IL office.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage heavy highway construction projects from award through completion.
  • Oversee project budgets, schedules, forecasts, and financial performance.
  • Coordinate earthwork, grading, excavation, underground utility, and roadway construction activities.
  • Review project plans, specifications, contracts, and change orders.
  • Lead project planning meetings and maintain effective communication with owners, engineers, subcontractors, and field personnel.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely and in compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively resolve issues impacting cost or schedule.
  • Review and approve subcontractor invoices, purchase orders, and project billings.
  • Manage project documentation, RFIs, submittals, and contract correspondence.
  • Support estimating and preconstruction efforts as needed.
  • Mentor project engineers and field staff.

Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years of project management experience in heavy highway construction.
  • A degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required. Equivalent experience in heavy highway construction, roadway construction, or project management will be considered.
  • Extensive experience managing earthwork and underground utility projects.
  • Strong understanding of roadway construction practices, grading, excavation, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main installation.
  • Experience managing project budgets, schedules, and contract administration.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel to project sites.

Salary & Benefits
Salary Range: $75,000-$100,000 annually.
