What does a Healthcare Software Engineer Entry Level do?

A Healthcare Software Engineer at the entry level designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications specifically used in healthcare settings. Their work helps improve the efficiency of healthcare operations, such as electronic health records, patient management systems, and medical billing software. Entry-level engineers often work as part of a team, collaborating with more experienced developers and healthcare professionals to ensure software meets regulatory standards and user needs. They may also be responsible for troubleshooting issues, updating existing software, and learning the unique security and privacy requirements of healthcare technology.

What are some typical challenges entry-level healthcare software engineers face when working with electronic health records (EHR) systems?

Entry-level healthcare software engineers often encounter challenges related to understanding the complex and highly regulated nature of electronic health record (EHR) systems. These include learning how to handle sensitive patient data securely, integrating applications with existing hospital infrastructure, and ensuring software compliance with healthcare regulations like HIPAA. Collaborating closely with clinicians and IT teams to gather requirements and troubleshoot issues is also common. Adapting quickly to evolving standards and prioritizing user-friendly design for non-technical medical staff can be particularly demanding but is essential for success in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry-Level Healthcare Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry-Level Healthcare Software Engineer, you need a solid grounding in programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), understanding of software development principles, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, healthcare interoperability standards (like HL7 or FHIR), and version control tools (such as Git) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and address complex technical challenges. These skills ensure the development of secure, reliable, and user-friendly software essential for supporting patient care and healthcare operations.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack
Location: NYC hybrid / remote
Hiring Period: Jan 2026 - Present
Compensation: $120 - 180k base salary + equity
Hiring Manager: Gabriel Khaselev (Co-founder & CTO)
About Passage Health
Passage Health is a fast-growing Series A startup on a mission to improve the quality and accessibility of autism care through technology. The diagnosis rate for autism has surged over the past decade to 1 in 31 children. Yet families still face waitlists of up to a year for care, as providers struggle to meet demand with outdated systems and manual workflows.
We're building the platform that powers autism care providers' entire business-from clinical documentation to operations to billing-modernizing how care is delivered and scaling access across a $460B market.
Over the past year, Passage has grown more than 3x year over year, driven by strong customer demand and expanding partnerships across the autism care ecosystem. As we continue to scale, we're focused on building durable foundations across the company, including the systems, processes, and decision-making needed to support long-term growth.
What you will be doing
As a Software Engineer you will take an active role in shaping early technology and product decisions, working directly with the co-founders and engineering team. We are looking for collaborative, pragmatic, and ambitious engineers who want to make a tremendous impact on providers and patients alike. You will take ownership and help shape many components across the stack: frontend applications for web and mobile, backend applications that serve API's and process data, architecture, infrastructure, and more. You will help build out the engineering team and foster a collaborative team environment. You will have opportunities to learn and grow and achieve goals well beyond this job description. This position is NYC hybrid / remote.
What success looks like
  • Join the Engineering team and help build, maintain, and iterate on software across the stack.
  • Help improve healthcare for our patients and providers by developing great products.
  • Help define engineering processes that let us develop quickly and produce high quality software (including writing tests and technical documentation).
  • Multiply the outcomes of your teammates through collaboration and code review.
  • Engage in the entire life cycle of product engineering, including sprint planning, retrospectives, on-call rotation, deploying software.
  • Build an understanding of our business and industry, enabling our innovative approach to healthcare software with your technical decisions.
What you will bring
  • You have significant depth with more than one language or framework, and you have experience shipping into production.
  • You are capable of spanning the entire stack when necessary.
  • You are impact focused and have a bias for action and delivery.
  • You set a high bar for technical excellence and can help others reach it too.
  • You are able to anticipate technical and operational risks, and can help mitigate them.
  • You will place compliance, security, and ethics at the forefront of our systems.
Technology
You'll play a significant role in determining what technologies we use at Passage.
Today, we use these technologies:
  • Typescript
  • React, React Native (iOS and Android)
  • PostgreSQL
  • AWS, Aptible, Terraform
Why Passage Health?
  • As a Software Engineer, and early employee, you will have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact on the company and our users.
  • Chance to use your skills to help children with autism.
  • Preference for working in a fast-paced environment with exciting challenges.
  • Competitive salary and equity compensation.
  • Healthcare, dental, and vision benefits.
