Purposeย
The purpose of this position is to educateย middleย school & high school-aged childrenย (6thย through 12thย grades)ย using classical methodsย andย aย biblical worldviewย in order toย prepare studentsย with excellenceย to pursue Godโs truth,ย knowledgeย and wisdom,ย and to do soย with diligence and perseverance.ย
Summaryย
The Logic and Rhetoric School teacher provides instruction within the classical Christian tradition, guiding students through the logic and rhetoric stages of learning. Building upon the foundational knowledge acquired in Grammar School, the teacher helps students thoughtfully examine, articulate, and defend the truth, goodness, and beauty of Godโs created order. Instruction is discussion-based and designed to develop critical thinking, logical reasoning, debate, and effective written and oral communication skills across all disciplines.
The teacher leads, instructs, disciples, and mentors students in a manner consistent with the Schoolโs Statement of Faith and the Portrait of a Geneva Teacher. The teacher also partners purposefully with parents in the academic and spiritual development of their children, collaborates collegially with fellow faculty and staff, and actively pursues ongoing intellectual and professional growth.
Supervision Received and Exercisedย
The LS/RS teacher receives direction from the Logic School Headmaster, Rhetoric School Headmaster and the Department Head. The LS/RS teacher must exercise judgment that is in keeping with the Schoolโs philosophy of education, beliefs and values, and with the approved curriculum. The LS & RS Headmaster or designee will offer instruction, advice, direction and mentoring. The work is reviewed regularly and consistently.
The LS/RS teacher exercises functional supervision over students and classroom environment.
Work Scheduleย
This is a full-time, academic year position. In general, the workday is 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for ten months. However, as an exempt employee, the employee is expected to work beyond the workday to perform duties outlined in the job description and as assigned. There is a mandatory faculty or department meeting once a week.

- Respect the Schoolโs Christian mission and values, and aid students in Christian formation by exemplifying Christian living, both in and out of the classroom
- Be a positive role model for students by supporting Genevaโs Beliefs including the Schoolโs Statement of Faith and Statement on Identity, Sexuality and Genderย and exemplifying the Portrait of a Geneva Teacherย ย
- Perform duties as a minister and steward of the Christian faith
Lesson Planning, Preparation and Presentationย
- Demonstrate understanding of pedagogical knowledge,ย skillsย andย objectivesย in a classical, Christian school
- Establish a classroom environment that follows the classicalย methodologyย with a biblical world viewย
- Implement the approved educational programย
- Develop,ย maintainย and implement lesson plans, learning activities, schedules, etc. that fulfill the requirements of theย Schoolโsย curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation, asย requiredย
- Review,ย reviseย and write curriculum,ย modifyingย plans based on student diagnostic and assessment results with Department Head and RS/LS Headmaster approvalย
- Establish clearly articulated standards for student academic performanceย
- Produce lesson plans to provide evidence ofย appropriate instruction, learning strategies and activities and whenย necessary,ย have available for use by substitute teachersย
- Meet all FACTS and/or SIS entry deadlines for lesson plans and homework and update as neededย
Student Learningย
- Convey information to students using a variety of modalities, e.g., auditory, visual, demonstrations, discovery, etc.ย
- Convey information to students in ways that support the classical methodology and are appropriate for teenagers
- Useย clear languageย andย appropriate vocabulary, integrating new vocabulary within existing shared frameworkย
- Deliberately articulate how all subjects are interrelated, as parts of Godโs integrated universeย
- Provide just, reliable, understandable grade/reward structuresย
- Schedule and assign instructional activities and homework with clear goals, providingย timelyย feedback on the resultsย
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal andย informal testingย toย monitorย students' learning, academicย progressย and personal growth toward statedย objectivesย of instructionย
- Explain to students the grades received and ensure understanding of how improvement might be possibleย
- Provide private and public positive reinforcement for individual and group successesย
- Maintain student learning results by providing instructional feedback, reviews, coaching, counseling, tutoring, mentoring, etc.ย
- Maintain records of students' educational progress by documenting accomplishments, attendance and behavior using FACTSย
Classroom Managementย
- Understand, embrace,ย interpretย and apply Geneva School policies, procedures, and regulations affecting School operations and programsย in accordance withย the Logic School cultureย
- Establish,ย articulateย andย maintainย standards of student behavior to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning and respectย
- Create classroom environment conducive to learning andย appropriate forย the physical, social, and emotional development of studentsย
- Maintain a safe, organized, clean, and stimulating environment in the classroomย
- Manage student behaviorย in accordance withย Logic and Rhetoric School Handbooks
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilitiesย
- Prioritize tasks, including non-urgent, but important mattersย
- Compile,ย maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documentsย requiredย
- Know and understand safety procedures including training in first aid and CPR; to beย maintainedย every two yearsย
- Maintain personal classroom practices and deportment that foster an atmosphere of support and predictability for the studentsย
- Understand and implement the demerit and House Point systems
Communicationย
- Establish meaningful emotional/psychological engagement with students, findingย appropriate waysย to be involved in studentsโ outside-the class lives without compromising privacy (for example: attending occasional athletic events or plays)ย
- Establish andย maintainย professional relationships and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community membersย ย
- Maintain godly relationships with parents, other staffย membersย and the communityย ย
- Communicate proactively with parents through email, notes, phoneย callsย and conferences to inform them about School programs and/or to discuss student progressย
- Support parents by providing academic information, suggesting available educational and social resources, addressing concerns, and answering questions and requests with LS Headmaster input and supportย
- Answer all emails and phone calls inย a timelyย fashion and be available for appointments with parentsย

- Hold a bachelorโs degree (or its equivalent) in the subject area assigned OR a bachelor'sย degreeย (or its equivalent) and relevant teachingย experienceย in the subject area assigned

Preferred Experience and Abilitiesย
- Knowledge of and experience with the philosophy of classical Christian educationย
- Five (5) years teaching experience in an educational setting in the subject area assignedย
- State issued Teacherโs Certification in area of assignmentย
- Experience with FACTS (used for lesson plans, grade book, communications, etc.) and ParentSquare (used for general communications)ย
- For math and science teachers: experience with Smart boards and other equipment necessary to meet learning objectivesย
Work Environmentย
Physicalย and Mentalย Requirementsย
- Regular walking with ability toย observeย all studentsโ movements in the classroom, on the fields, and other campus locationsย ย
