Position Summary:

The Head of Primary Casualty Claims, North America, is responsible for strategic leadership, management, and execution of all primary casualty claims operations across the region. This role is pivotal in driving best-in-class claims service delivery, optimizing staffing models, managing technical excellence, and aligning operations with both regional and global objectives. The ideal candidate blends strong leadership, technical prowess, and business acumen with a passion for people development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy
  • Develop and execute the North America Primary Casualty claims strategy consistent with organizational goals and the global claims vision.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to the Head of Casualty Claims, North America, providing input on emerging trends, risk, and claims innovation.
  • Build, lead, and inspire a high-performing regional claims team ensuring a collaborative and inclusive culture.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Design, implement, and optimize scalable staffing models to ensure efficient case management and balanced workloads across the claims operation.
  • Oversee all aspects of primary casualty claims (e.g., General Liability, Auto Liability, Product Liability), ensuring best practice handling, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective resolutions.
  • Establish and monitor KPIs and reporting mechanisms to track file quality, service delivery, and operational efficiencies.
  • Technical Oversight & Governance
  • Provide technical guidance on primary casualty claims, including coverage analysis, litigation management, and reserve adequacy.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, relevant laws, and regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions.
  • Talent & Resource Management
  • Lead workforce planning and resource allocation, proactively addressing staffing needs in alignment with changing portfolio and market conditions.
  • Develop and mentor claims talent, fostering career progression and succession planning.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal partners, brokers, clients, and third-party service providers.
  • Represent the company in mediations, arbitrations, large-loss discussions, and industry forums as required.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required; JD or advanced degree preferred.
  • 12+ years' experience in casualty claims within the property & casualty insurance sector, with at least 5 years in senior management.
  • Deep expertise across a range of primary casualty lines (GL, AL, etc.).
  • Strong background in workforce modeling, staffing strategies, and resource optimization.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to lead complex claim files and manage high-stakes negotiations.
  • In-depth knowledge of North American insurance regulations and litigation trends.

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in New York, Starr Insurance Companies is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets: experience and training: licensure and certifications: and other business and organizational needs. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $250,000 - $275,000.
