As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for haptic hardware engineer in the United States is $146,230.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $123,500.00 and $163,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a haptic hardware engineer do?

A Haptic Hardware Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing hardware systems that provide tactile feedback, allowing users to 'feel' virtual objects or interactions. These engineers work on components like sensors, actuators, and control systems to create realistic touch sensations for products such as smartphones, gaming controllers, VR/AR devices, and automotive interfaces. Their work involves collaborating with software engineers, industrial designers, and product teams to ensure the haptic experience is both functional and immersive. They also troubleshoot and optimize hardware for efficiency, reliability, and user satisfaction.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a haptic hardware engineer?

To thrive as a Haptic Hardware Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, experience with sensor and actuator design, and a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Proficiency with CAD tools, embedded systems, PCB design software, and familiarity with tactile feedback technologies is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork skills help set candidates apart in this field. These technical and interpersonal skills are essential for developing innovative haptic devices that enhance user experiences in consumer electronics, automotive, or VR/AR applications.

What are common challenges faced by haptic hardware engineers during product development?

Haptic Hardware Engineers often encounter challenges balancing tactile feedback quality with device size constraints and power consumption. Achieving realistic and responsive haptic sensations requires close collaboration with software teams to ensure seamless integration. Additionally, engineers must continuously test and refine prototypes to address issues like latency, durability, and user comfort, which can be complex in fast-paced development cycles. Effective communication across multidisciplinary teams is essential to overcome these challenges and deliver innovative haptic solutions.

What is the difference between Haptic Hardware Engineer vs Haptic Software Engineer?

AspectHaptic Hardware EngineerHaptic Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and developing physical haptic devices and componentsDeveloping software algorithms and applications for haptic feedback systems
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, gaming hardware, VR/AR hardware

Haptic Hardware Engineers focus on designing and testing the physical components of haptic systems, while Haptic Software Engineers develop the software that controls and enhances haptic feedback. Both roles are essential in creating immersive tactile experiences in various tech industries.

Job description

Position Summary

The Principal Electrical Design Engineer is a subject matter expert within the product development team, bringing deep technical expertise in mixed-signal electrical design. This role drives innovation by applying current best practices and emerging technologies to develop cutting-edge solutions and differentiated intellectual property. This is a high-impact, hands-on technical leadership role at the core of our product innovation.

You will help define the next generation of our medical devices while strengthening the technical foundation needed to support a growing product portfolio. You will play a critical role in bridging early-stage innovation with scalable, reliable product development, directly influencing system architecture, product performance, and engineering processes as the organization grows.

You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities while independently driving complex projects from concept through production. You play a key role in defining system and hardware requirements, balancing speed with the rigor required for regulated medical devices.

This role is based in our Eden Prairie, MN Corporate Office.

Job Responsibilities

•         Drive key architectural decisions that impact current and future product platforms

•         Lead mixed-signal electrical design efforts across the full product lifecycle, from concept and development through launch and sustaining support

•         Translate user needs, clinical insights, and product requirements into robust system-level design solutions

•         Apply engineering analysis (analytical, simulation, and empirical testing) to ensure designs meet functional and reliability requirements

•         Define and implement system architecture and hardware design best practices

•         Evaluate and integrate new technologies (ICs, electromechanical systems, power circuits) with consideration for scalability, manufacturability, and supply chain constraints

•         Architect and develop automated test systems to support product validation, manufacturing, and continuous improvement

•         Lead products through regulatory compliance and testing (e.g., EMC, electrical safety), including standards such as FCC Part 15 and IEC 60601-1

•         Develop and maintain design control documentation (user needs, design inputs, verification/validation, DHF artifacts)

•         Mentor engineers and elevate technical standards across the team

•         Collaborate cross-functionally (mechanical, firmware, software, quality, and manufacturing) to translate product vision into robust, manufacturable solutions

•         Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

•         Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or related field with 7+ years of experience designing mixed-signal circuits in a regulated environment

•         Proven expertise in low-noise signal acquisition and signal conditioning circuit design

•         Demonstrated technical leadership, including experience guiding and mentoring engineers through the product development lifecycle

•         Strong hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, including breadboarding, simulation, PCB design/layout, and proof-of-concept validation

•         Ability to translate product requirements into system architecture and detailed implementation

•         Working knowledge of applicable standards and regulations (e.g., IEC 60601-1 family, UL, FCC Part 15)

•         Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment while managing multiple competing tasks and demands

•         Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and ability to overcome technical challenges

Preferred Qualifications
