Job description

Job Title Sustaining Engineer – Surgical Robotics

Contract Duration - 10 months/w2

Position Overview

We are seeking a Sustaining Engineer – Surgical Robotics to support the design, serviceability, reliability, and lifecycle management of advanced robotic surgical systems. This role will partner with cross-functional engineering teams to improve product maintainability, develop service solutions, support verification activities, and ensure field readiness for complex medical devices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and implement Design for Serviceability (DfS) requirements for surgical robotic systems, including modular designs, easy component access, quick-connect interfaces, and service-friendly architectures.
  • Partner with Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and Systems Engineering teams to improve product reliability and serviceability.
  • Perform serviceability FMEA, risk assessments, and reliability improvement activities.
  • Develop and maintain service documentation including:
  • Service BOMs
  • Maintenance procedures
  • Calibration protocols
  • Troubleshooting guides
  • Support product development activities through design, verification, validation, and launch phases.
  • Define and validate built-in diagnostics, fault detection, and remote support capabilities.
  • Develop service workflows for installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of robotic systems.
  • Collaborate with Field Service and Training teams to improve technician support and customer experience.
  • Ensure service processes comply with medical device quality and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics Engineering, or related field.
  • 1–3+ years of experience in sustaining engineering, service engineering, field service engineering, or product development.
  • Experience supporting complex electromechanical systems (medical devices, robotics, automation, or similar products).
  • Knowledge of medical device regulations and standards:
  • FDA 21 CFR Part 820
  • ISO 13485
  • IEC standards
  • Experience with:
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Technical documentation
  • Troubleshooting and root cause analysis
  • Verification and validation (V&V)
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work with cross-functional engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with surgical robotics or medical robotic systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Design for Serviceability (DfS) principles.
  • Experience with Design History Files (DHF) and medical device design controls.
  • Knowledge of robotic systems, sensors, diagnostics, telemetry, and electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience creating service manuals, repair procedures, or technician training materials.
  • Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement experience.
  • Experience working with inspection tools, test equipment, and validation processes.
