Job description

Hall Monitor

Purpose Statement

The job of Hall Monitor is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non-classroom activities; minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; and communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well-being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors.

This job reports to Building Administrator.

Essential Functions

  • Assist a variety of people (e.g. school personnel, visitors, etc.) for providing information and assisting appropriate personnel for the safety and security of the site.
  • Collaborate with internal and external parties (e.g. school personnel, police, first responders, etc.) for ensuring that current safety protocols are understood and acted upon.
  • Communicate safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
  • Escort students, assigned personnel and/or visitors for providing direction, ensuring their safety and providing site security.
  • Intervene in potential conflicts and emergency situations for minimizing disruptions of campus activities and/or injury to involved parties.
  • Monitor student behavior during and between assigned periods and at student events (e.g. general campus, halls, etc.) for ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Prepare written materials (e.g. incident reports, activity logs, etc.) for documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Refer incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate site personnel for ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
  • Respond to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues for providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
  • Respond to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Supervise school corridors, locker rooms, restrooms, assembly and athletic facilities, gymnasiums, bus loading areas, and other campus locations for observing student behavior and preventing violations and/or unsafe activities.
  • Supervise student behavior before and/or after school and during and between assigned periods (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, library, cafeteria, etc.) for ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single tasks using existing skills. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include modeling appropriate behavior; adhering to safety practices and procedures; customer service; enforcing rules and regulations; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and using pertinent software applications.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.  Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include standards of courtesy and behavior expected of students; record keeping; safety practices and procedures; and principles of customer service and conflict resolution techniques.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include communicate with diverse groups; work effectively with District personnel, students, parents and members of the public; work extended hours; adapt to changing work priorities; work as part of a team; problem solving; and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing.  The job is performed under minimal temperature variations.
