What is a GTM engineer?

A GTM (Go-to-Market) Engineer is a professional who bridges the gap between technical product development and commercial teams. GTM Engineers work closely with sales, marketing, and product teams to ensure new products or features are successfully launched and adopted in the market. They help translate technical capabilities into customer benefits, provide technical expertise during sales cycles, and may assist with product demonstrations, solution architecture, and customer feedback. Their goal is to accelerate product adoption and support revenue growth through technical enablement.

What are some typical challenges a GTM engineer faces when integrating new products into existing sales and marketing workflows?

A GTM Engineer often encounters challenges such as aligning technical product features with the needs of the sales and marketing teams, ensuring seamless data flow between tools (like CRMs and marketing automation platforms), and translating complex product capabilities into clear value propositions. Additionally, they must anticipate and resolve compatibility or scalability issues that could impact go-to-market strategies. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and maintaining open communication is key to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring successful product launches.

What do Gtm engineers do?

GTM (Go-to-Market) engineers develop and implement technical solutions to support product launches, sales strategies, and marketing campaigns. They often work with tools like CRM systems, marketing automation platforms, and analytics software to ensure seamless integration and data flow. Their role involves collaboration with sales, marketing, and product teams to optimize go-to-market processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GTM engineer?

To excel as a GTM Engineer, you need a solid background in software engineering, product management, and business acumen, often with a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) platforms, cloud services, APIs, and analytics tools is commonly required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help bridge technical and business teams effectively. Mastering these areas ensures successful product launches, customer satisfaction, and alignment between technical solutions and market needs.

Staff GTM Engineer

Buildkite

Pacific, WA โ€ข Remote

$220K - $240K/yr

Full-time

Job description

About Buildkite

Buildkite's CI platform is trusted by the world's leading engineering teams, helping ship software used by more than 1 billion people every day. Companies including Canva, Meta, Mistral AI, and NVIDIA rely on Buildkite to run builds, tests, and deployments on their infrastructure, ours, or both - giving them the speed, reliability, and flexibility to ship with confidence.

About the Role

This is a Staff GTM Engineer role: you'll own the orchestration engine behind Buildkite's go-to-market motion - the data foundations, workflows, and AI-assisted tooling that let Sales and Brand operate end-to-end without tool sprawl or guesswork.

You'll operate at the intersection of engineering rigor and commercial reality: someone who can ship production systems and who's spent real time inside a CRM, understands how pipeline actually moves, and knows why deals stall.

What You'll Do

Build the GTM data foundation

  • Map Buildkite's GTM and brand experience end-to-end, and build a signal taxonomy that defines what's actionable at each stage
  • Establish a clean, enforceable data foundation and a coherent operating system without tool sprawl
  • Partner tightly with Sales and Brand to turn ambiguity into clarity

Build workflows that scale

  • Design AI-assisted workflows that speed up human work without removing human judgment
  • Implement guardrails and quality checks so automated output stays trustworthy
  • Build workflows that hold up at volume

Ship and measure GTM plays

  • Devise and ship stage-specific plays across the customer journey, and make them measurable and iterative
  • Work side-by-side with Sales and Brand to diagnose funnel friction and ship fixes that stick

Raise the bar for how GTM is run

  • Document decisions, risks, and tradeoffs like an engineering team, because this is an engineering problem with commercial impact
  • Create standards and reusable components so GTM execution gets faster and more reliable over time, not more fragile as it scales
This Is You If...
  • You've shipped and operated production systems, and you've spent real time living inside a CRM - you understand GTM motion from the inside, not just from the outside looking in
  • You've built systems that power revenue teams and can point to concrete failures and outcomes, not just theory
  • You're fluent in how sales and modern marketing actually work today - funnel mechanics, lifecycle sequencing, brand consistency, demand capture
  • You've built and scaled AI-led workflows using tools like Clay, Customer.io, or reo.dev (or adjacent toolchains)
  • You take messy, cross-functional processes and design simple, reliable systems that improve them permanently
  • You think laterally about funnel problems, care about ROI, and avoid vanity metrics
  • You document clearly so your systems can be trusted, maintained, and improved by others
Bonus Points If...
  • You're comfortable with SQL and lightweight scripting (TypeScript/Python) for integrations and workflow glue
  • You have experience with CRM/data architecture and scaling without breaking
  • You're familiar with intent/ABM systems and deliverability/suppression discipline
  • You've worked in developer tools or technical GTM motions where trust is the whole game
Benefits
  • Work from anywhere in the world for up to 6 weeks a year, on top of a fully remote setup - great work doesn't have to happen from one desk.
  • 20 days paid annual leave plus 10 days sick & carer's leave - actively encouraged, we want you to be at your best and time off is a part of that.
  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for primary carers (6 for secondary) - becoming a parent is life changing and we're committed to supporting you and your family through it.
  • A remote-work allowance for home-office kit, co-working, or working elsewhere - we want you to have everything you need to be set up for success in your role.
  • Confidential EAP & mental health support - sometimes life gets hard. You should be able to access the resources and support you need.
  • Support for learning and growth - with time and budget for conferences, courses, and coaching so you have the opportunity to grow, improve your craft, and build mastery.
  • Retirement and health coverage (based on your region) - build towards your future, your way.

Exact benefits may vary slightly by country. We'll walk through the specifics for your location.

Compensation

The base salary range for this role is $220,000-$240,000 USD. Compensation is determined based on geographic location, relevant experience, and qualifications.
