What is a growth equity job?

A growth equity job involves investing in and supporting rapidly expanding companies, typically focusing on providing capital to help scale operations and increase market share. Professionals in this field analyze business performance, conduct due diligence, and work with portfolio companies to drive growth, often requiring strong financial modeling and industry knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in growth equity?

To thrive in Growth Equity, you need strong financial analysis, valuation, and due diligence skills, typically backed by a degree in finance, business, or economics. Familiarity with financial modeling tools (such as Excel), CRM platforms, and data analytics software is essential, and certifications like CFA can be advantageous. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship-building abilities help professionals stand out in sourcing deals and working with portfolio companies. These skills ensure informed investment decisions, successful deal execution, and value creation in a highly competitive investment environment.

What is growth equity?

Growth equity is a form of private equity investment that focuses on investing in relatively mature companies that are looking to expand or restructure operations, enter new markets, or finance a significant acquisition without changing control of the business. Unlike venture capital, which typically invests in early-stage startups, growth equity targets companies that have established revenues and a proven business model but need capital to accelerate their growth. Growth equity investors usually provide both funding and strategic guidance, helping companies scale while aiming for substantial returns when the company is eventually sold or goes public.

What is the difference between Growth Equity vs Private Equity Associate?

AspectGrowth EquityPrivate Equity Associate
Required CredentialsTypically MBA or finance background, strong analytical skillsSimilar credentials, often with MBA or finance experience
Work EnvironmentFocus on high-growth companies, more operational involvementBroader deal scope, including mature companies, more financial modeling
Employer & Industry UsageVenture capital firms, growth equity fundsPrivate equity firms, buyout funds
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in growth investingComparing private equity career paths

Growth Equity professionals focus on investing in high-growth companies, often with operational involvement, while Private Equity Associates typically work on mature companies with buyout strategies. Both roles require strong financial skills and similar educational backgrounds, but differ in deal types and company stages.

What does a growth equity professional do?

Professionals in Growth Equity typically split their time between sourcing new investment opportunities, conducting due diligence on potential portfolio companies, monitoring existing investments, and collaborating with management teams to drive growth. Much of the day is spent analyzing financial statements, market research, and industry trends, as well as meeting with entrepreneurs and other investors. Teamwork is essential, as deals are often worked on collaboratively with colleagues from legal, finance, and operations. The fast-paced environment requires balancing multiple projects and adapting quickly to changes in market conditions or company performance.

Does growth equity pay well?

Growth equity professionals typically earn competitive salaries that include base pay, bonuses, and carried interest, especially at senior levels. Compensation varies based on experience, firm size, and performance, with many roles offering lucrative earning potential in the finance industry.

Morgan Stanley Growth & Innovation (MSGI) is an MSIM strategy targeting late stage, growth equity investments in scaled, private, high-growth companies in fast-growing technology sectors. The strategy targets category-defining companies operating in large addressable markets with significant long-term compounding potential. The MSGI strategy sits under the broader Private Credit & Equity (PC&E) platform with over 300 professionals globally managing approximately $62Bn of client capital across direct private equity and private-credit strategies.

Recent MSGI strategy investments include scaled private technology companies across frontier AI research and foundational models, unified data and AI analytics, next-generation defense technology, and modern financial software. The strategy has meaningful capital available for new investments, positioning the team to be highly active across late-stage growth equity opportunities. This is a unique opportunity to join a lean and entrepreneurial investment team at an inflection point for the platform, helping deploy capital into category-defining private technology companies while contributing to the continued buildout of a differentiated growth equity strategy within Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

Morgan Stanley Investment Management is seeking a Vice President to join Morgan Stanley Growth & Innovation. The Vice President will work directly with senior investors and play a central role across the full investment lifecycle, with a particular focus on deal execution, underwriting, and diligence.

This is a high-impact opportunity for an investor who can serve as the day-to-day lead on live transactions, manage complex diligence workstreams, build conviction around investment opportunities, and help translate analysis into clear investment recommendations. The role will also involve company relationship-building, thematic research, portfolio company support, and broader strategy development for a growing investment platform.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead day-to-day execution of new late-stage growth equity investments, including opportunity evaluation, diligence, underwriting, structuring, Investment Committee approval, and closing in partnership with senior investors.
  • Own the investment recommendation, including key diligence findings, valuation framework, competitive positioning, risk / reward assessment, downside case, return scenarios, and exit path.
  • Manage internal and external deal workstreams, including direct engagement with management teams, industry experts, advisors, legal, tax, finance, operations, and compliance.
  • Oversee Investment Committee materials and junior team execution, providing direction and mentorship to ensure analysis is rigorous, conclusions are well-supported, and work product is clear, polished, and decision-ready.
  • Support portfolio company monitoring, follow-on investment analysis, thematic research, market mapping, and relationship development, with the opportunity to take on increasing origination and investment ownership over time.

Qualifications:

  • 6-10 years of relevant investment experience, including meaningful experience in growth equity, late-stage venture capital, technology-focused private equity, or technology-focused crossover investing, with significant exposure to technology sectors.

  • Strong technology investing judgment, including the ability to assess market structure, competitive positioning, product differentiation, growth durability, unit economics, valuation, and exit paths.
  • Demonstrated ability to form independent investment views, synthesize complex information, and communicate clear, well-supported recommendations to senior decision-makers.
  • Commercial curiosity and pattern recognition across innovation-driven sectors, with the ability to identify attractive companies, themes, and market opportunities.
  • Maturity, presence, and sound judgment to work directly with senior investors, management teams, advisors, Investment Committee members, and cross-functional stakeholders across the Firm.
  • High-ownership, low-ego leadership style, with the ability to manage multiple live workstreams, develop junior professionals, and contribute over time to thematic sourcing, relationship development, and broader investment ownership.
