Summary of Responsibilities

The Grinder performs precision smoothing, sharpening, polishing, or grinding of metal objects. This job description indicates the general nature and level of the work that is expected. Primary Responsibilities

  • Load work pieces into grinding machines, then perform specific grinding operations.
  • Compute numbers, widths, and angles of cutting tools, micrometers, scales, and gauges, and adjust tools to produce specified cuts
  • Finish surfaces of work pieces, using prescribed equipment, grinding wheels and hand tools.
  • Inspect and measure workpieces to ensure that surfaces and dimensions meet specifications.
  • Monitor machine operations to determine whether adjustments are necessary; stop machines when problems occur.
  • Select and mount grinding wheels on machines, according to specifications, using hand tools and applying knowledge of abrasives and grinding procedures.
  • Set up and operate grinding or polishing machines to grind metal parts, tools, or work pieces.
  • Study blueprints or layouts of metal workpieces to determine grinding procedures, and to plan machine setups and operational sequences.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Vocational training or 3 years of Grinder experience
