What are some common challenges faced in a Global Logistics role, and how can candidates prepare to address them?

Professionals in Global Logistics often navigate challenges like coordinating shipments across different countries, managing customs regulations, and dealing with supply chain disruptions. Candidates can prepare by developing strong problem-solving skills, staying informed on international trade laws, and gaining experience with logistics software. Being proactive in communication and collaborating closely with suppliers, carriers, and internal teams is also essential for smooth operations. Adaptability and attention to detail are key, as priorities can shift quickly due to unforeseen events such as delays or regulatory changes.

What Are Jobs in Global Logistics?

Global logistics is the common term for the practice of processing goods from initial production through their distribution to customers, including sourcing the raw materials required for the production process. In this role, you may manage international shipments along a supply chain, ensure each facility has everything it needs to continue its operations, and otherwise provide management and oversight of logistical needs. Global logistics managers help ensure cost-effective purchasing schedules, resolve problems with shipments, give reports to executives, and help prepare supply chains for future needs and company growth. This job title focuses on managing international logistics chains and should not be confused with logistics jobs that only obtain international products from local providers.

What is global logistics?

Global logistics refers to the management of the flow of goods, information, and resources between suppliers and consumers across international borders. This field oversees the planning, implementation, and coordination of complex supply chains that involve transportation, warehousing, customs, and distribution worldwide. Professionals in global logistics work to ensure goods are delivered efficiently, cost-effectively, and in compliance with international regulations. Their work is essential for companies that operate globally and need to move products across different countries and continents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Global Logistics, and why are they important?

To thrive in Global Logistics, you need strong organizational skills, knowledge of supply chain processes, and typically a degree in logistics, business, or a related field. Familiarity with logistics management software, transportation management systems (TMS), and certifications such as APICS or CSCMP are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and negotiation skills distinguish top performers in this field. These skills are essential for efficiently coordinating complex international shipments, managing risks, and ensuring seamless supply chain operations.

Director of Global Logistics
An advanced hardware and defense technology company is seeking a Director of Global Logistics to build and lead its end-to-end logistics and international shipping operation.
This is a highly strategic and hands-on leadership role focused on standing up scalable global logistics infrastructure from the ground up. The ideal candidate has experience operating in complex, fast-moving environments where they were responsible not only for execution, but also for designing the systems, workflows, and processes behind the operation.
The role will oversee international shipping, freight forwarding, customs coordination, export compliance, and logistics operations supporting highly regulated hardware programs and global customers.
Responsibilities
Global Logistics & Shipping Operations
  • Own all inbound and outbound logistics operations across domestic and international channels
  • Manage carrier selection, routing strategies, freight forwarding partners, and shipment execution
  • Coordinate closely with Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Program teams to ensure successful delivery execution
  • Ensure shipments are delivered on time, compliantly, and without damage
  • Build scalable shipping workflows capable of supporting increasing production volume and global operations
Export Compliance & International Trade
  • Ensure compliance with ITAR, EAR, and other applicable export regulations
  • Oversee export classifications including ECCN and USML categorization
  • Manage international shipment execution including government and defense-related programs
  • Coordinate with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and external logistics providers
  • Maintain documentation, audit readiness, filings, and shipment records
Process Development & Operational Scale
  • Establish logistics infrastructure, documentation standards, SOPs, packaging procedures, and shipment workflows
  • Implement scalable operational processes and systems for shipping and trade compliance
  • Help define organizational structure and operational ownership across logistics functions
  • Partner cross-functionally to improve visibility, efficiency, and operational readiness
Risk Management & Issue Resolution
  • Identify and mitigate shipping, customs, compliance, and operational risks
  • Resolve shipment delays, customs holds, and transportation issues
  • Act as escalation point for critical logistics and trade-related problems
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in logistics, global shipping, international trade, or export operations
  • Strong experience with international freight forwarding and customs processes
  • Working knowledge of ITAR, EAR, export controls, and trade compliance requirements
  • Experience managing customs documentation, brokers, and global shipment execution
  • Proven experience building or scaling logistics operations, processes, or teams
  • Ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong cross-functional communication and operational leadership skills
Preferred Experience
  • Defense, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, or other regulated hardware industries
  • Experience supporting FMS, government, or defense-related shipment requirements
  • Familiarity with ERP, WMS, or TMS platforms and logistics system integrations
  • Experience managing 3PLs, freight forwarders, and external logistics partners at scale
  • Exposure to ATA Carnet processes and temporary import/export workflows
  • Startup, scale-up, or high-growth operational experience strongly preferred
  • Licensed Export Compliance Officer certification or equivalent experience is a plus
What Makes This Opportunity Unique
This is an opportunity to build a global logistics function from the ground up inside a rapidly scaling advanced hardware environment.
The company is looking for someone who can create structure, processes, and operational rigor where little infrastructure currently exists. The right person will have significant ownership and influence across logistics strategy, trade compliance, operational scaling, and international execution.
The role is best suited for someone who enjoys building systems, solving complex operational problems, and operating close to hardware, manufacturing, and mission-critical delivery timelines.
Additional Information
  • Competitive compensation and equity package
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage
  • 401(k) matching
  • PTO flexibility
  • Relocation assistance may be available
  • Onsite collaboration environment
