Geometric Modeling information

What is geometric modeling?

Geometric modeling is the mathematical and computational process of representing the shape and structure of objects in two or three dimensions. This field is widely used in computer-aided design (CAD), computer graphics, animation, engineering, and architecture. Geometric modeling involves creating and manipulating digital models using points, lines, curves, surfaces, and solids, allowing for visualization, simulation, and fabrication of real-world objects. Professionals in this area use specialized software to design complex structures, analyze their properties, and prepare them for manufacturing or virtual rendering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geometric Modeling Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geometric Modeling Specialist, you need strong mathematical proficiency, spatial reasoning, and experience with 3D modeling, often supported by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling tools (such as Blender, Maya, or SolidWorks), and programming languages like Python or C++ is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective problem-solving skills are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure the accurate creation and manipulation of complex models essential for product design, animation, simulation, and engineering applications.

What are some typical challenges faced by geometric modeling professionals in a collaborative project environment?

Geometric modeling professionals often work as part of multidisciplinary teams, collaborating closely with engineers, designers, and software developers. A common challenge is ensuring that complex models meet both aesthetic and functional requirements, while staying compatible with different software platforms used by the team. Clear communication and iterative feedback are essential to resolve discrepancies and maintain model integrity throughout the project lifecycle. Balancing technical accuracy with project deadlines is also a frequent aspect of the role.

What is the difference between Geometric Modeling vs CAD Designer?

AspectGeometric ModelingCAD Designer
CredentialsKnowledge of geometry, CAD software, and 3D modelingSimilar, often requires CAD software proficiency and technical drawing skills
Work EnvironmentDesign studios, engineering firms, manufacturingArchitectural firms, engineering companies, manufacturing
Industry UsageUsed in product design, animation, simulationUsed in drafting, technical drawings, project planning
Search & Comparison IntentFocus on 3D modeling techniques and softwareFocus on technical drafting and design documentation

While both roles involve design and technical skills, Geometric Modeling primarily focuses on creating 3D models and shapes, often for engineering or animation purposes. CAD Designers concentrate on technical drawings and detailed plans used for manufacturing or construction. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

About Us
Higharc is a VC-backed startup that is changing how new homes are designed and built. Join a founding team who've shipped products for Autodesk, Electronic Arts, Nike, and Apple. We have raised over $175M with support from top-notch venture capital firms and more than 18 strategic investors-industry leaders in construction, building products manufacturing, and distribution.
We are seeking Senior Software Engineers to contribute to our core geometric modeling technologies that support design, presentation, and analysis of homes. We are remote-first, this role can sit anywhere in the continental US or Canada.
What You'll Do
Expect to:
  • Conceive and implement algorithmic solutions to the most difficult geometric modeling problems
  • Work closely with other engineers, product, and customer success teams to define expected behavior, discover gaps in existing product, and ultimately ensure customers are happy
  • Write tests to verify that your code can handle the worst corner cases.
  • Mentor junior developers to write code as robust as yours.
About You
The right candidate for this role prioritizes working software over perfection and wants to deliver code, get user feedback, and iterate. Your ability to be hands-on, while also focusing on the bigger strategic picture, sets us apart. You're not hesitant to deeply understand our codebase to contribute effectively to it.
You have:
  • 5+ years of experience working in CAD or geometric modeling
  • Knowledge of geometric modeling concepts techniques such as but not limited to meshes, BReps, NURBS, and BSPs.
  • Able to understand and navigate a large TypeScript + React codebase
  • Professional fluency with modern development tools, including AI-assisted workflows, paired with clear ownership of the correctness, maintainability, and behavior of the code you produce.
  • Excellent communication within a dynamic organization - highlighting tradeoffs, delivery timelines, and making decisions considering various alternatives
  • Ideally you have a strong interest in the homebuilding industry, whether it's a passion for homes, construction, or home design and you're motivated by the prospect of elevating an entire industry through geometric modeling.

While we've identified the core experience and skills required above, please still apply if you have more or different experience than this! We will use your previous experience and performance across the series of interviews to establish appropriate level within our organization in a fair and equitable way.
Working at Higharc
Higharc has been remote first since our founding in 2018. We offer flexible hours so you can do your best work without missing out on life. Higharc offers competitive salaries with significant equity, in a fast-growing, well-funded company.
Personal healthiness is an important value for us- we provide comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, with flexible PTO, and meaningful maternity/paternity leave to all U.S based employees that are full-time. You'll also have access to other big-company benefits such like short and long-term disability plans and a 401K. Haven't worked remotely before? We provide a stipend to create the ideal home office.
Please note: we are seeing an uptick of fraudulent recruiting activity claiming to be associated with Higharc. All communication and outreach from our in-house team will come from an @higharc.com email address.
