What is a general maintenance worker?

General maintenance workers are skilled professionals responsible for performing a variety of repair and maintenance tasks in buildings and facilities. Their duties often include fixing plumbing systems, repairing electrical issues, maintaining heating and cooling systems, and performing carpentry or painting work. They ensure that equipment and facilities remain in good working condition and comply with safety standards. General maintenance workers may be employed by schools, hospitals, office buildings, or apartment complexes. Their versatility and broad skill set make them essential in keeping properties functional and safe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a general maintenance worker?

To thrive as a General Maintenance Worker, you need a solid understanding of basic repair, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance across plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. These skills ensure the safe, efficient operation and longevity of building systems, minimizing downtime and costly repairs.

What are some common challenges general maintenance workers face when managing multiple repair requests?
