Job description

SHIPPING AND LOGISTICS SPECIALIST (COMMERCIAL NUCLEAR)

POSITION SUMMARY
Sonic Services International is seeking a detail-oriented and safety-focused Radioactive Materials Shipper to support the safe, compliant, and timely shipment of radioactive materials, contaminated tools, components, equipment, and radioactive waste used in support of commercial nuclear power plants.
This role is responsible for preparing, packaging, documenting, and coordinating domestic and international shipments in accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Energy (DOE), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) regulations, while maintaining GE Vernova's commitment to Nuclear Safety Culture and quality excellence.
The successful candidate will collaborate with Radiation Protection, Project Management, Quality Assurance, Logistics, Engineering, and Field Service teams to ensure all shipments meet regulatory requirements and customer commitments.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepare, package, classify, mark, label, and document radioactive material shipments in accordance with federal and international regulations.
  • Coordinate shipments supporting commercial nuclear power plant outages and field service activities.
  • Prepare Shipping Papers, Bills of Lading, Dangerous Goods Declarations, Certificates of Compliance, Waste Manifests, and export documentation as required.
  • Verify package integrity, contamination surveys, dose rates, and package classifications before shipment.
  • Ensure compliance with 49 CFR, NRC, DOE, IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and the IMDG Code.
  • Coordinate transportation with approved commercial carriers and specialized radioactive material transport providers.
  • Work closely with Radiation Protection personnel to ensure packages meet release criteria.
  • Maintain inventory control of radioactive materials, contaminated tooling, and shipping containers.
  • Support outage logistics by preparing time-sensitive shipments to customer nuclear generating stations.
  • Maintain shipping records in accordance with Quality Assurance and regulatory retention requirements.
  • Participate in internal audits, customer audits, and regulatory inspections.
  • Identify and resolve shipping discrepancies while implementing corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, compliance, and operational excellence.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Clean legal background with no outstanding or pending legal charges.
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol testing at time of hire and through random testing.
  • Valid Driver’s License with no pending charges
  • Acceptable driving record in accordance with company and DOT standards
  • Experience using Oracle ERP systems.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel formulas.
  • Must be a United States citizen.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum three years of experience shipping hazardous materials, radioactive materials, or regulated industrial products.
  • Working knowledge of DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain radioactive material shipping certifications.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Nuclear Technology, Engineering Technology, Logistics, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience supporting commercial nuclear power plants or nuclear service organizations.
  • Current DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping Certification.
  • Radioactive Material Shipping Certification.
  • Experience with SAP, Oracle, or enterprise inventory systems.
  • Radiation Worker qualification.
  • Familiarity with Type A and Type B packaging, Industrial Packages (IP-1, IP-2, IP-3), Excepted Packages, Low Specific Activity (LSA) material, and Surface Contaminated Objects (SCO).
  • Experience with export compliance and international logistics.
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
