Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time User Interface Designer 1 at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for creating compelling User Interface experiences and delivering superior design solutions for a variety of Garmin products.
Essential Functions
  • Conceptualize, design, and prototype original User Interface designs for new features and products using artistic judgment
  • Develop unique and compelling User Interface designs that showcase creativity while ensuring alignment with and enhancement of existing design languages
  • Apply artistic expertise to remain current on Garmin product lines and emerging technologies, tailoring designs to reflect UI advancements
  • Analyze/interpret User Interface design trends and competitors' work to create innovative solutions that set Garmin apart
  • Communicate creative concepts/designs using mockups, story boarding, visual presentations and writing behavioral documentation, articulating artistic choices and design rationale
  • Curate/organize original design assets including custom icons, fonts, and other graphics for future use ensuring brand continuity
  • Apply advanced critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills in identifying and resolving complex design problems, ensuring quality and usability
  • Manage projects with minimal supervision of Creative Leader and/or lead designer, demonstrating independent creative direction
  • Provide meaningful feedback in User Interface design reviews, offering insightful suggestions that drive innovation and originality in the team's designs
  • Establish and apply design standards/procedures to implement innovative User Interface designs and influence the broader design strategy
  • Present original User Interface design solutions to the Creative Lead and/or lead designer, emphasizing creative thought process and artistic choices
  • Collaborate with User Experience and Software Engineering teams to negotiate design tradeoffs
  • Ensure visual and artistic consistency across product lines, refining and adapting designs to maintain a cohesive brand identity
  • Remain current on traditional graphics design skills and stay current on new design tools and techniques

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design/Visual Communication OR Associate's Degree in Graphic Design/Visual Communication AND a minimum of 2 years as a Garmin Production Artist OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge
  • Demonstrates a proficient understanding of imaging formats, quality factors, and output-related information fundamental design skills (Composition, information architecture, color theory, typography and animation)
  • Understanding of designing for interactive/on-screen product interface
  • Demonstrates strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be flexible, able to work independently or in a team in a fast-paced environment, must demonstrate strong organization skills, and have the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple tasks
  • Basic knowledge of required programs: primarily Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Figma
