What is a garden assistant?

Garden Assistants are individuals who support the maintenance and development of gardens, parks, or landscaped areas. Their duties typically include planting, watering, weeding, pruning, mowing lawns, and helping with pest control. They may work under the supervision of a head gardener or landscaper and often use a variety of hand tools and small machinery. Garden Assistants play a key role in keeping outdoor spaces healthy, attractive, and well-maintained.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a garden assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Garden Assistant, you need basic horticultural knowledge, physical stamina, and experience with general gardening tasks such as planting, pruning, and weeding. Familiarity with common gardening tools, lawn mowers, and sometimes certification in pesticide application are typically valuable. Attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to follow instructions make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure gardens are well-maintained, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing, contributing to overall client satisfaction.

What are some common challenges garden assistants face when working in different weather conditions?

Garden Assistants often work outdoors in varying weather, which can present challenges such as extreme heat, rain, or cold. Adapting to these conditions requires proper attire, hydration, and sometimes adjusting work schedules to ensure safety. Additionally, certain tasks like planting or pruning may need to be rescheduled based on weather, so flexibility and effective communication with the team are important. Employers typically provide guidance on best practices for staying safe and productive in all conditions.

Job description

Section Gardener (Horticulture Team)

Department: Baywood Horticulture
Reports To: Section Lead Gardener
Classification: Full-Time / Non-Exempt
Schedule: 40 hours/week, typically 6:30 AM–3:00 PM (hours may vary slightly based on weather and seasonal needs)

Join a team that helps maintain one of the region’s most beautiful and distinctive landscapes.

Baywood is seeking a hardworking, dependable, and detail-oriented Section Gardener to join our Horticulture team. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in beautiful landscapes, and wants to be part of a team that creates and maintains exceptional garden spaces throughout the year.

As a Section Gardener, you will play an important hands-on role in the care and presentation of annual and perennial plantings, ornamental beds, naturalized areas, and seasonal displays within your assigned section of the property. This is more than a basic landscape maintenance role — it is an opportunity to contribute to a highly visible, horticulturally rich environment that is enjoyed by residents, guests, and visitors every day.

If you enjoy meaningful outdoor work, value craftsmanship, and want to see the direct results of your effort in a truly beautiful setting, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

Section Gardeners assist with the daily maintenance and seasonal care of landscaped areas throughout their assigned section. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining perennial and annual planting beds to a high standard of appearance
  • Weeding landscaped beds, gravel areas, woodland edges, meadows, and dry ponds
  • Assisting with planting, transplanting, mulching, and seasonal bed change-outs
  • Pruning shrubs and woody ornamentals properly and at the appropriate time of year
  • Supporting the overall health, cleanliness, and presentation of garden spaces
  • Assisting with seasonal projects such as:
    • Bedding plant installation and removal
    • Holiday/Christmas light installation
    • Snow removal
    • Other horticulture and grounds-related duties as assigned

Section Gardeners work closely with their Section Lead Gardener and other members of the Horticulture team to ensure that all areas are maintained with care, consistency, and attention to detail.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for someone who is reliable, motivated, and takes pride in outdoor work. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Some experience in landscape maintenance, gardening, horticulture, or groundskeeping
  • A genuine interest in plants and outdoor work
  • The ability to work safely and productively in a variety of weather conditions
  • The ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • A positive attitude and willingness to work as part of a team
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality

Why This Role Is Different

At Baywood, our landscapes are a central part of the experience. The work you do here is seen and appreciated. You’ll be part of a team that helps care for beautifully designed garden spaces, seasonal displays, and distinctive plantings that make the property special year-round.

This is a great opportunity for someone who:

  • Enjoys working outdoors and staying active
  • Wants to build hands-on horticultural experience
  • Takes pride in beautiful, well-maintained gardens
  • Values steady, full-time work with a consistent daytime schedule
  • Likes being part of a team that creates visible, lasting results

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is an active, outdoor position that requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, and working in changing weather conditions throughout the year.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors in heat, cold, and light precipitation
  • Schedule is generally 6:30 AM–3:00 PM, with some flexibility based on weather and seasonal operational needs

Uniform & Dress Expectations

  • Company polo shirts provided
  • Safety vests provided as needed
  • Employees should wear khaki pants or shorts during the season
  • Off-season attire should be weather-appropriate and suitable for outdoor work
Baywood offers a strong benefits package including full medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and accident insurance, paid vacation and holidays, and a 401(k) with company matching contributions
