Description
The Gallery Associate is the primary point of contact for visitors, playing a crucial role in creating a positive and welcoming atmosphere. The Gallery Associate is responsible for executing daily front-of-house operations, welcoming visitors, supporting exhibitions and events, and executing basic administrative and sales tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet gallery guests; answer questions regarding current exhibitions, artists, and pricing; and maintain a welcoming, interactive atmosphere aligned with the Museum's mission and retail goals.
- Maintain physical surveillance of public spaces to protect works of art from theft, accidental damage, or touching.
- Manage opening and closing procedures (turning on lights, deactivating alarms, adjusting furniture), monitor guest attendance, and maintain a welcoming and comfortable environment through light cleaning.
- Process artwork and retail transactions via Square, sell tickets and membership via Tessitura, and answer phone calls.
- Assist with merchandising and inventory strategies.
- Assist in executing special events in the gallery and off-site, like exhibition openings, concerts, education events, and artist talks, serving as bartender as needed.
Requirements
- A high school diploma
- 1-2 years of experience in retail sales or customer service preferred
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills, cultural sensitivity
- Proficiency in arts and culture preferred
- Ability to stand or remain alert on the gallery floor for long periods, comfortably navigate stairs, and lift or shift objects ranging anywhere from 20 to 50 lbs.
- Comfort using basic point-of-sale systems, database management tools, spreadsheets, and scheduling apps
This is a part-time (10-20 hours per week) position. Shifts may vary based on event schedules, but weekends are required. The gallery is open Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday 1-5 pm, Thursday 1-7 pm, and Saturday 11 am-5 pm. Special events are common and happen mostly in the evening and on weekends.
