Inside Plant (ISP) Technician

Job Summary:

The Inside Plant (ISP) Technician installs fiber and copper cabling for telecommunications projects, ensuring safety and compliance in diverse settings. This role requires maintaining a clean worksite, collaborating with other trades, and using various tools to complete installations. Additionally, this role installs, services, troubleshoots, and repairs electronic equipment in telecom facilities, ensuring customer specifications are met. The ISP Technician is essential for maintaining the performance and integrity of the Inside Plant.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Installs and repairs electrical wiring systems and fixtures within telecommunications equipment shelters, including:
  • Low voltage (data, alarming, control, 12V to 48V DC systems), rectifier, and battery systems
  • 120/240V single phase, 120/208V 3-phase, and 277/480V 3-phase systems
  • Interprets construction drawings, RF data sheets, and technical documentation
  • Completes cabinet and rack installation, cable management (ironwork, ladder rack, fiber duct), and grounding
  • Installs and organizes CAT5/6 and fiber network cabling
  • Applies experience with low-voltage power systems (-48V DC), including grounding and termination procedures
  • Performs basic network cable testing and DC power installation
  • Runs, tests, terminates, and labels all fiber and copper wiring
  • Troubleshoots and services issues with electrical panels and systems, including communications, digital/analog signal, DC power, and AC power up to 480V
  • Installs conduits and pipes to house electrical wires and cables
  • Ensures piping and raceways meet applicable electrical codes
  • Installs equipment grounding systems according to customer specifications
  • Tests electrical systems to verify correct installation and operation
  • Inspects electrical systems to assess repair needs
  • Replaces conduit, wiring, and circuit breakers as necessary
  • Works cooperatively with co-workers, contractors, and the public, adhering to safety protocols
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Communicates instructions, project requirements, and progress clearly and accurately
  • Installs all electrical systems in compliance with NFPA 70 National Electrical Code and company specifications
  • Performs additional related duties as needed

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to read blueprints and/or follow work order.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, wiring and circuit building.
  • Ability to route and constrain wiring in an organized and logical manner.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools.
  • Proficiency in pipe bending and installation Including EMT, PVC, and threaded rigid pipe.
  • Proficient in the use of test meters and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate forklift, telehandler, and aerial lifts.
  • Good interpersonal skills and team interaction.
  • Experience with Microsoft and smartphones/tablets for timekeeping, email, and documentation.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Related experience required.
  • Apprentice, Journeyman preferred. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to see color to discern color-coded wiring.
  • Prolonged periods standing, kneeling, bending, and climbing ladders or scaffolding.
  • Must be physically capable of pulling wires and cables through conduits.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time.
