The mission of the Property Clerk Division is to accept, catalog, safeguard, store, produce as required for court, return to legal owner or otherwise legally dispose of all property coming into the custody of the New York City Police Department. Approximately two-thirds of all property taken in is evidence required for criminal cases. Other categories of property accepted include the safekeeping of found property, defendant's property, prisoner's property, property no longer needed as evidence or for further investigation, contraband seized, peddler property, pending release DNA evidence and property confiscated for forfeiture proceedings. Property received by the Division includes cash, jewelry, rifles, handguns, various weapons, general property of every description, evidence related to homicides and other crimes and vehicles. All property coming into and leaving the Property Clerk Division is subject to strict legal constraints. Evidence property is regularly signed out for presentation to Criminal Court. Property that can be legally returned to its rightful owner is done so in a timely manner. Contraband is destroyed when it is no longer needed for a criminal case. The Property Clerk Division auctions all vehicles and unclaimed general property via the internet via authorized agent.
The Property Clerk Division is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the role of Bookkeeper II to perform the following duties which include, but are not limited to:
- Under varying degrees of difficulty, perform computations and/or supervisory bookkeeping functions related to financial records
- Under supervision, with little latitude for independent or unreviewed action or decision, perform computations of ordinary difficulty and responsibility related to financial records
- Perform computations and posts or compiles financial data as directed for accounting purposes, or for calculating balances or refunds
- Examines demands and verifies their accuracy by consulting supporting financial records and data
- Posts to general end subsidiary ledgers and journals
- Performs bank reconciliations prepares balances and/or makes adjusting and closing entries to accounts

BOOKKEEPER - 40526
(1) Completion of 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), including 6 credits in accounting; or
(2) A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization, and two years of satisfactory full-time bookkeeping experience; or
(3) A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. College education may be substituted for experience in "2" above on the basis that 15 semester credits from an accredited college may be substituted for each year of required experience. However, all candidates must have a high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and either 6 semester credits in accounting from an accredited college or 6 months of experience as described in "2" above.
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, at least one year of experience as a Bookkeeper (40526) or at least four years of satisfactory full-time bookkeeping experience.
