Job description

Job Title: Medical Writer

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Position level: P2a

Health Union powers the first and largest community-based activation and data platform, transforming healthcare by providing unparalleled support, information, and validation for millions navigating complex health conditions and their care teams. With over 125+ condition-specific online communities and 15 years of community leadership, Health Union's authentic engagements fuel the company's robust suite of endemic media, influencer marketing, market research, and data solutions, driving proven outcomes for patients, HCPs, and brands.

Position Overview:

Health Union is seeking a Medical Writer to join our Community Editorial Team. In this role, you will develop, write, and maintain health content for both patient and healthcare professional (HCP) audiences across our online health communities. Content needs vary by project and campaign, so you will move between plain-language patient education and more technical, clinically oriented content written for clinicians.

This is a hands-on role for an early-career writer who wants to grow. You will work closely with community team members and expert medical reviewers, with direction and support along the way. This position provides real development opportunities for driven, curious people. Responsibilities may change and evolve as the team and Health Union grow.

What You Do:

  • Write and edit patient education content in clear, accessible, plain language
  • Write technical and clinically oriented content for HCP audiences, grounded in primary scientific literature and clinical guidelines
  • Use AI tools to accelerate and strengthen the content development process - research, drafting, source verification, and quality assurance - while applying human judgment and editorial standards to everything that goes out the door
  • Find, verify, and accurately cite credible medical references
  • Work with community team members and expert medical reviewers to move content through review and revision
  • Stay abreast of relevant health news, treatment approvals, and guideline updates across the disease states we serve
  • Optimize content for both traditional search and AI-driven search, including AI overviews, chat assistants, and other answer engines
  • Manage and implement large content update and refresh projects across existing communities, tracking progress and keeping work moving to deadline
  • Communicate clearly and proactively with community team members, freelance writers, and expert medical reviewers
  • Apply strong grammar and consistent adherence to house style across everything you write

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts, Communications, Journalism, Public Health, Life Sciences, or a related field, or relevant experience
  • 1-3 years of work experience in medical writing, content management/editorial, or consumer health education
  • Comfort writing for two very different audiences - patients and clinicians - and adjusting tone, depth, and register accordingly
  • Genuine curiosity about how AI tools can improve content development; hands-on experience using AI in a writing, research, or editorial workflow is a plus
  • Comfort with change and a fast-paced environment; you are energized by shifting priorities and new ways of working
  • An eye for detail and accuracy; strong command of English grammar
  • Familiarity with AMA Style and principles of plain language and health literacy
  • Ability to translate complex clinical information into simple, digestible, and intuitive communications
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects against deadlines
  • Ability to work independently once given direction, and to ask good questions when you need them answered
  • Proactive, flexible, and positive, with a willingness to bring content development ideas to the table
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets)
  • Basic knowledge of medical statistics and the ability to read and interpret clinical study design and findings
  • Familiarity with search optimization techniques, WordPress or basic HTML, and Asana is a plus

Annual base salary for positions at this level and job group is $60,000-$70,000, and your base pay will depend on the qualifications, experience, skills, and competencies required for this job.

At Health Union, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range that provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role.
