What is a freelance copywriter?

Freelance copywriters create written content for clients. As a freelance copywriter, your primary responsibilities are understanding what your clients need and creating content to fulfill those needs. You often write for clients interested in content marketing, so your writing projects include articles, blog posts, social media copy, email marketing campaigns, case studies, and whitepapers. Other job duties include marketing your copywriting services, negotiating rates and contracts, writing and revising content, and submitting work to your clients. Freelance copywriters are self-employed and work on a contract basis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance copywriter?

To thrive as a Freelance Copywriter, you need strong writing, research, and editing skills, typically supported by a portfolio showcasing your work and an understanding of marketing concepts. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs, and platforms such as Google Docs is often required. Creativity, adaptability, and clear client communication are vital soft skills that set top copywriters apart. These abilities are crucial for producing compelling content, meeting client needs, and succeeding in a competitive, deadline-driven environment.

What are some common challenges freelance copywriters face when managing multiple clients?

Freelance copywriters often juggle several clients at once, which can lead to challenges with time management, setting boundaries, and ensuring consistency in voice and quality across projects. Meeting overlapping deadlines and handling varying client expectations require strong organizational skills and clear communication. Successful freelancers typically use project management tools, maintain detailed briefs, and set realistic timelines to avoid burnout and deliver high-quality work for every client.

What is the difference between Freelance Copywriter vs Content Writer?

AspectFreelance CopywriterContent Writer
CredentialsPortfolio, writing samples, sometimes marketing or advertising knowledgePortfolio, research skills, sometimes SEO knowledge
Work EnvironmentRemote, freelance projects, client-basedRemote or in-house, content creation for websites, blogs, or publications
Employer & Industry UsageFreelance clients, marketing agencies, businessesMedia companies, online publishers, corporate blogs

While both roles involve writing, a Freelance Copywriter primarily creates persuasive content for marketing and advertising, often working independently with clients. A Content Writer focuses on producing informative or engaging content for websites, blogs, or publications, which may be in-house or freelance. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

At MissionWired, we help our partners create revolutionary fundraising strategies that advance their mission, change our country, and have a positive impact on the world.

We help our partners tell big, ambitious stories that invite their supporters into communities to raise mission-changing revenue. Our results are unrivaled, having converted more than $4.5 billion in donations to the world's most trusted philanthropies and groundbreaking campaigns. We do it over email and SMS, in the mail, across social media, everywhere. We don't think in terms of channels; we're single-minded in pursuit of your success.

We're innovative, progress-obsessed, do-gooders who care deeply about social change and continuing to push the limits on what we can accomplish together. We've brought strategies to life for nonprofit organizations working around the world, including Human Rights Watch, The Humane Society of the U.S., Save the Children, and Friends of the Earth. Over the years, we have worked with various progressive political organizations and believe that each election cycle is an opportunity for us to support organizations across the country and elect Democrats to legislative bodies up and down the ballot.

We're an equal-opportunity employer and take seriously our commitment to equality and equity. Our efforts to be inclusive and create opportunity don't end when someone joins us - they begin. We've set our sights on changing the world through our work and with our clients, and representation is at the foundation of what we do. We know that diversity of thought and background makes us stronger. That's why we're committed to building and maintaining a diverse community.

Every new team member broadens our perspective and allows us to think bigger. We'll be at our best when people from underrepresented communities and people with a range of perspectives and lived experiences want to come, stay, and push the boundaries of what's possible.

Overview: MissionWired is always seeking great people to join our teams. In our Resume Pools, you can submit your resume and we'll reach out as soon as we have an opening in your specialized field! If you have an eye for the creative and feel passionately about progressive activism, you're in the right place! You might be a copywriter, graphic designer, web designer, email producer, digital editor, video editor, generally artistic, or multi-talented looking for part-time work.
