Job description

Overview:
Alta Advisors is a boutique strategic finance and accounting firm that supports some of the most ambitious venture-backed startups in deeptech, hardtech and applied AI. Our clients include companies in AI, robotics, aerospace, healthtech and cleantech backed by top-tier VCs such as Lightspeed, Coatue, Eclipse, Founders Fund, DCVC and more.

We are expanding our elite team of finance leaders and are hiring an experienced Fractional CFO to support our growing roster of clients. This is an opportunity to join an exceptional group of operators and work at the highest levels of startup finance.

The Role:
As a Fractional CFO at Alta Advisors, you will be the primary finance partner to multiple venture-backed startups. You will drive strategic decision-making, oversee financial operations, lead fundraising efforts, and provide Board and investor-ready reporting. You will be supported by a high-caliber team of FP&A and accounting professionals, including alumni of Big 4 accounting firms and bulge bracket investment banks, enabling you to focus your time on strategic, high-impact leadership.

This role is ideal for a seasoned senior finance leader—someone who has served as a CFO or VP of Finance in high-growth venture-backed startups and is eager to make an impact across multiple companies while building a thriving fractional CFO practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as CFO to Alta’s venture-backed startup clients, providing strategic leadership and financial oversight
  • Lead high-level financial strategy, Board communications, and executive reporting
  • Oversee FP&A, including forecasting, budgeting, and performance management
  • Oversee accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and coordination of tax and audit processes
  • Support capital raising processes, including preparation of financial materials and investor communications
  • Manage internal teams to ensure high-quality delivery of accounting, FP&A, and financial operations
  • Manage client scope, profitability, and identify opportunities for upsell or expansion

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years total experience in finance, with strong accounting fluency
  • 3+ years in a CFO or VP Finance role at high-growth venture-backed startups
  • Strong technical accounting experience required; CPA strongly preferred
  • Experience supporting capital-intensive businesses in sectors like deeptech, hardtech, and applied AI
  • Experience with capital raising and investor management
  • Strong modeling and presentation skills (Google Sheets + Slides)
  • Excellent communication and executive presence
  • Able to manage multiple client relationships and scale supporting teams to deliver high-quality service efficiently

What We Offer:

  • Flexible remote work on your terms
  • Access to a growing pipeline of top-tier startup clients
  • An elite team that handles execution and deliverables, so you can focus on high-level strategy and client impact
  • Freedom from business development, marketing, and back-office headaches
  • Significantly higher cash earning potential than a full-time role
  • Potential for equity partnership in Alta Advisors and equity stakes in select client companies for top performers

What to Expect:

  • Paid as an independent contractor (no benefits; tax payments are your own responsibility)
  • Compensation is hourly and commensurate with experience

Why Alta?
Alta Advisors was founded in 2024 with a mission to raise the bar for strategic finance in the startup ecosystem. We're building a best-in-class firm focused on high-impact, complex and capital-intensive businesses. If you're an experienced finance leader looking to deepen your exposure across world-changing startups without going it alone, Alta is the ideal home.
