How much do fpga jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for fpga in Oregon is $155,755.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $137,400.00 and $176,600.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Do FPGA engineers make a lot of money?

FPGA engineers typically earn competitive salaries due to their specialized skills in digital design, hardware description languages, and FPGA development tools. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but they are generally higher than average for engineering roles, especially with certifications and expertise in high-demand areas like embedded systems or high-speed data processing.

Is FPGA a good career?

A career as an FPGA engineer involves designing and implementing digital circuits using field-programmable gate arrays, requiring skills in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog. The field offers strong job growth, competitive salaries, and opportunities in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and consumer electronics. Continuous learning and certification in FPGA tools can enhance career prospects.

What is an FPGA?

An FPGA job involves designing, developing, and testing Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), which are reconfigurable hardware devices. Engineers in this role use hardware description languages (HDLs) like VHDL or Verilog to implement digital circuits. Their work spans industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and automotive, where high-speed processing and real-time performance are critical.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the FPGA position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Engineer, you need expertise in digital logic design, a solid background in electrical or computer engineering, and proficiency in hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog. Familiarity with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, as well as simulation and debugging platforms, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are essential soft skills for collaborating with engineering teams and delivering reliable designs. These skills ensure successful implementation, testing, and optimization of complex programmable hardware solutions.

What are some common challenges FPGA engineers face in their daily work?

FPGA Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting strict timing constraints, optimizing resource usage, and debugging intricate hardware designs in a fast-paced development cycle. Dealing with evolving project requirements and ensuring seamless system integration with other hardware or software components can also be demanding. Collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams—including firmware, software, and PCB designers—requires clear communication and adaptability. Overcoming these challenges not only strengthens your problem-solving skills but also provides valuable experience for career growth in high-tech industries.

Job description

The Role

We are seeking a Senior FPGA & Silicon Bring-up Engineer to accelerate the development of next-generation communications ASICs. You will own FPGA prototyping, firmware enablement, first-silicon bring-up, and hardware validation, serving as the bridge between ASIC design, firmware, software, and system integration. This role spans the entire silicon lifecycle from pre-silicon FPGA platforms that enable early hardware/software integration to post-silicon debug, interface validation, and automated test infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Develop FPGA-based prototypes to enable early ASIC integration, firmware development, and system validation.
  • Build hardware platforms that allow software and firmware teams to develop before first silicon.
  • Support first-silicon bring-up, debug, and functional validation.
  • Develop automated validation infrastructure for silicon characterization and regression testing.
  • Configure and validate digital interfaces including high-speed Ethernet SerDes, SPI, UART, GPIO, and other peripheral interfaces.
  • Develop FPGA-based traffic generators, protocol checkers, and test applications for interface validation.
  • Debug issues spanning RTL, firmware, software, FPGA prototypes, and silicon using simulation and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Collaborate closely with ASIC Design, Verification, Firmware, Software, Systems, and DFT teams to accelerate product development.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of FPGA development experience using Verilog/SystemVerilog and AMD/Xilinx FPGA tools.
  • Strong understanding of ASIC development and digital system architecture.
  • Experience with FPGA prototyping for ASIC development.
  • Experience with firmware/software enablement and hardware bring-up.
  • Strong hardware debugging skills using JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Proficiency with Python and scripting for automation and test infrastructure.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with networking, communications, or satellite systems.
  • Experience with embedded processors (ARM or RISC-V).
  • Experience working with hard real-time embedded systems (bare-metal or RTOS).
  • Experience validating high-speed digital interfaces, including Ethernet and SerDes protocols, SPI, and UART.
  • Experience with silicon bring-up using JTAG, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base salary range for this role is $120,000 - $225,000 + equity in the company
  • Salary will be based on several factors including, but not limited to: knowledge and skills, education, and experience level
  • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, medical/dental/vision/ coverage, life insurance, paid parental leave, and many other perks
