What is a founding treasurer?

A Founding Treasurer is a key financial leader in a newly established organization, responsible for setting up financial systems, managing budgets, ensuring compliance, and overseeing financial reporting. They play a crucial role in securing initial funding, establishing financial policies, and guiding long-term fiscal strategy. Their work helps build financial stability and transparency, ensuring the organization's sustainability and growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding treasurer?

To thrive as a Founding Treasurer, you need a robust background in financial management, accounting principles, and strategic planning, often supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or business administration. Proficiency with accounting software (such as QuickBooks or Xero), financial modeling tools, and familiarity with regulatory reporting requirements is essential. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities set outstanding candidates apart, as does an entrepreneurial mindset. These skills ensure sound financial stewardship, legal compliance, and the ability to shape the organization's financial infrastructure from the ground up.

What are some common challenges faced by a founding treasurer in a startup or early-stage company?

As a Founding Treasurer in a startup environment, you may encounter challenges such as establishing financial systems from scratch, managing limited resources, and ensuring regulatory compliance with minimal administrative support. The role often requires wearing multiple financial hats—ranging from budgeting and fundraising oversight to implementing internal controls and cash flow management. Close collaboration with co-founders and stakeholders is essential, as you'll play a key role in shaping financial strategy and supporting critical business decisions. Adaptability, foresight, and a proactive approach to problem-solving are crucial to navigate ambiguity and set a strong financial foundation for growth.

Do founding treasurers make good money?

Founding treasurers typically earn salaries that vary based on the organization size, industry, and location, with compensation often including benefits and equity in startups. In established organizations, they may earn a salary ranging from moderate to high, especially if they have financial expertise and certifications like CPA or CFA. Compensation can also depend on the scope of responsibilities and the organization's financial health.

What does a founding treasurer do for a foundation?

A founding treasurer is responsible for establishing the financial systems of a foundation, including managing budgets, overseeing accounting, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. They often develop financial policies, prepare reports for the board, and may use accounting software to track funds. This role requires strong financial skills and attention to detail during the foundation's startup phase.

Job description

Confidential client — a Seed-stage company (1-10 employees) building a SaaS platform for finance and treasury teams at local governments, covering reconciliation, reporting, cash flow forecasting, and AI-powered financial insights, with a long-term vision to be the one-stop shop for financial services for public agencies.

The company has raised $7M in total funding, has progressed beyond the pilot stage with five live customers, and is targeting 15 clients by year end. Founding team brings deep fintech and government finance experience. Full-Time, In-person, Santa Monica, CA. Experience: 0-3 years. Salary: $70,000-$85,000/yr. Visa sponsorship: None available. 2 positions.

About the Role: Hiring two Founding BDRs to open doors and build the top-of-funnel pipeline that powers the company's growth across California and, eventually, the broader Western US and beyond. These are the first two seats on the sales team, working directly alongside the head of go-to-market on cold calls, email outreach, and LinkedIn to generate qualified meetings with finance and treasury leaders at local government agencies. The BDR who earns it can move into an account executive role, with upward mobility tied to hitting activity and meeting targets, not a fixed tenure clock.

What You'll Own:

- Own top-of-funnel outreach via cold calls, email, and LinkedIn to finance and treasury teams at local government agencies

- Generate qualified meetings for the head of go-to-market, ensuring prospects show up and the conversations are substantive

- Build and maintain relationships with government agency contacts, moving beyond transactional outreach to genuine relationship development

- Manage pipeline activity and follow-through in the CRM, keeping outreach cadences consistent and organized

- Collaborate directly with leadership to refine messaging, targeting, and outreach strategy as the sales motion scales from California to the Western US and beyond

Must-Have:

- True grit and willingness to put in the reps: this is a high-activity, consistency-driven role with no existing playbook

- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to maintain follow-up and build real relationships, not just set meetings

Company stage: Seed. Work type: In-person (Santa Monica, CA). No visa sponsorship available.
