Job description

Howmet Engine Systems has an immediate opening for a Forging Machine Operator (Ring Mill/Press/Heat Treat), to assist in the manufacturing process at our facility in Rochester, NY.   Our current need is 12-hour shifts, 5pm-5am.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor forging equipment, including ring mills, hydraulic presses, and expanders
  • Load and unload furnaces and perform heat treat operations in accordance with process specifications
  • Follow work instructions, routers, and process control requirements to ensure consistent production
  • Program, adjust, and troubleshoot equipment to maintain optimal performance
  • Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges)
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications
  • Ensure compliance with AS9100 and internal quality systems
  • Monitor critical process variables such as temperature, cycle time, and material handling
  • Accurately record production, inspection results, and non-conformances
  • Maintain production efficiency while minimizing scrap and rework
  • Conduct basic equipment checks and support preventive maintenance activities
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with 5S standards
  • Safely operate material handling equipment such as cranes, manipulators, and forklifts
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and maintenance teams to resolve issues and improve processes


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Prior experience operating machinery in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and process documentation
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and equipment interfaces
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and reliable attendance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in forging operations (ring rolling, open-die, or closed-die forging)
  • Familiarity with heat treating processes (quenching, tempering, annealing)
  • Experience working within AS9100 or other regulated quality systems
  • Experience with CNC or PLC-controlled equipment
  • Overhead crane and/or forklift certification

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is based in a heavy manufacturing environment and requires:

  • Ability to lift and handle materials up to 50 lbs. or more
  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and repetitive motion
  • Comfort working in high-temperature, high-noise environments
  • Working safely around heavy machinery and moving equipment
  • Use of required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Shift work, overtime, and weekend hours required

Salary Range:            $20-25 /hour depending on experience

Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
